I'm looking for a good used car and narrowed it down to either a 1.5tdci titanium focus or a 2.0tdi Skoda Octavia but the Skoda franchised dealers around me have none in stock only a couple of the 1.6tdi Octy's.

Motorpoint on the other hand seem to have a few Skoda's instock in my price range but I've never bought from a car supermarket before. If I take the plunge is it best to get an RAC check on it before handing over the cash?

The other (safe) option I have is to buy a Ford Direct Focus from a franchised dealer that comes with 2 year unlimited mileage warranty etc.

On a separate note, I've seen a 1.6tdi Skoda Octavia SE sport but not sure about the 5 gears? Will be using it mostly on motorway journeys so would I miss the 6th gear?

I've never bought from Motorpoint but there has been the odd horror story from them, I guess they're like any car supermarket and they must have a lot more satisfied customers than dis-satisfied otherwise they wouldn't be still in business, they tend to sell ex-fleet/lease cars mainly I believe.

I bought my Focus from there just over 2 years ago, they said it had no sat nav (Even though it just needed the SD card adding ;) ) and no service history (Emailed all the dealers with the VIN - Now it has full history).
They try selling you loads of warranties etc, but you can just say no to them all.
They don't like discounting the prices either, but they normally are quite competitive.

A lot of Motorpoint's stock under 2 years old is ex-hire stuff. Mechanically they should be fine, and they still have the benefit of a manufacturers warranty so I personally wouldn't bother with an RAC check, but I would go over the car carefully looking for any cosmetic issues - both inside and outside. I'd also check with a franchised dealer that there are no issues with the warranty or any recalls outstanding.

Never bought from them, but I have bought ex-hire cars from another car supermarket and never had any issues.

For motorway I'd definitely want a 6 speed transmission.

You could ask a Skoda dealer to source an Octavia for you - they will probably have access to the same sources Motorpoint use.

Looked at a car there (Abarth 500).

New tyres with low mileage on the clock on the front and it had a non standard interior dash colour. Enough to put me off.

Could have been explained perhaps if privately owned (you can change the trim but not a factory option) maybe got a flat that couldn’t be repaired and bought two new fronts (or been driven like it was stolen).

The salesman was very good when it came to suggesting alternatives as they obviously put me onto their closer when I asked for me £300 deposit back.

They also tell you it has been serviced by them before you collect and charge you. Er no thanks I’d take it to the dealer when it’s under warranty.

I’d maybe go back....

Got a choice between a 2.0tdi Skoda Octavia SE-L with 5000miles on clock from Motorpoint for £13,600 or a Skoda Octavia 1.6tdi SE sport with 9k miles for £13k from franchised dealer with Skoda approved used. Dunno which one to go for.

Finding myself cruising at 70 mostly these days on the motorway so not sure if I need the extra power of the 2litre engine.
