How exactly do these work? Do you just specify the folder of your music collection and it does the rest? Does it have live updating, so if I add songs via iTunes, would it update its database?

I take it they support Apple Lossless and Flac?

Cheers,

Tom

Yes, I have two Squeezebox's V3, connected to my HTPC, Slimserver is installed. Music as OGG, MP3, MPC & FLAC.

The Squeezebox's are basically media streamers & VFD. You connect them into your LAN (or WLAN) They connect to your host with slimserver installed (PC, QNAP or Buffalo Linkstation Pro with Linux & Slimserver) and access music. Music can be on local computer, or on your LAN (ie on another PC or NAS)

They can play FLAC but not sure about apple. A CI was asking about Apple codec, I just recommended to ditch itunes/apple format for flac.

Can't answer itunes question, but it does have rescan/search for new music. You can add your own plugins, I'm using Custom Browser.

If you have more than one you can sync them to both play the same music, or different tracks. Audio is sent either analogue or digitally from your SB into stereo amp, DAC etc.

oh if your LAN is wired only, get the wired squeezebox. It's £40 cheaper. One of my SB is within 3M of switch, so bit silly using wireless.

Thing is I don't really want to ditch iTunes because it has so much personality acquired over the past few years; ie playcounts, ratings etc etc

It's a shame the audio formats don't have built in support for such information.

Some people are saying it does play Apple lossless and others aren't, I'm going to see if the official site says anything.

Do any companies have a product like this that doubles as a hard drive? That way, it can play your music without your computer, but when your computer is on, it treats it just like an external hard drive?

Thanks for the info!

Here's a couple of snapshots.

If you can host a audiofile in apple lossless I'll try it out.

Do any companies have a product like this that doubles as a hard drive?

I've seen a couple that are stand alone "media players" however I don't think they have a VFD, so you need a display. Music playback isn't as good as Squeezebox either (analogue section)

Wow, that is extremely impressive!

The only thing is I can't see this of being any benefit to me. If my PC has to be on, then I'd use iTunes to playback the music anyway.

I can't believe these companies haven't thought of releasing a hard drive based media player, which is also connected to your computer.

I've uploaded an Apple Lossless File although the song only lasts about 30 seconds (to save space/bandwidth)

Download
Edit: removed

You can use a NAS hard drive as slimserver, Buffalo Linkstation pro with Linux and Slimserver (mate has gone down this route)

Using Squeezebox instead of the PC is far nicer setup. I have my HTPC next to squeezebox, I can use Winamp but really who wants to do that? Who wants to use natty mouse/keyboard and need the monitor to be on when you can just sit back on your couch and browse music?

Yup it's working!

You can always go to Slim Devices website and download Slimserver for free to try it out. It comes with a piece of software called Softsqueeze, which is basically a software Squeezebox that exactly mimics all the functions of the hardware device on your desktop. It's a great way to try before you buy.

I downloaded the software but, surprise sur-*******-prise, Squeezebox reports "Your player was not found."

I've tried playing around with the network settings but it won't work.

Great :(

That's better. Seems quite complicated to use but I guess that's just the dreadful programme version. I'm sure a remote would make life easier.
