Hey guys :)

I'm going to be releasing my first EP soon, and to mark the special occasion I want to get about 5 copies pressed to vinyl, 2 of which I'll be giving out in a competition, the others for me and my close mates :)

I've never had anything pressed to vinyl, so, my questions are:

What's the best place to get it done in London?

How much does it cost?

Would it be more cost effective to get a few more printed off?

And is there anything else I should know about it?

I may also be putting a copy up for grabs here with a small competition, so keep your eyes open :).

Thanks guys!

Nice idea but don't you mix CD's?

I'm getting technics at some point, but I want to hang it on my wall :)

And sometimes, I mainly DDJ. I can't afford CDJs yet, I should have 1 of them, a vinyl deck and a mixer next summer. Maybe 2 of each :)

It's not really going to be cheap.

There's only one place I believe that does one offs, at a cost of about £30 per side of a 7" and about £75 for one side of a 12" LP.

Pressing vinyl is very rarely cost effective, even in runs of 200 you are looking roughly £300 - £500, some places are even £400+ just for a run of 100.

Some places will charge on top for mastering but others will include it in that price.

Essentially, it ain't cheap.

I'm not sure how cheap you expected it to be, even 100 duplicated (one colour print) CDs from a DMS can cost you a good £100.

Don't release physically until you have a fan base that you could shift it to and be brutally honest and don't kid yourself by saying 'Yeah I reckon I could sell xx and break even' - it doesn't always work like that at all.

If you're going to release on physical media think more about it and don't just go 'CD in case' or 'vinyl!'.

Fair enough.

I wasn't doing it to break even, just as a special thing for my first release, but at that kind of money its not worth it. I'll get a CD set printed off instead :)

If it's just going on the wall then go down a charity shop and get some Max Bygraves disc for 5p and then print out your own Label and do the old switcheroo. Simplez.

If you are looking to get a batch of CDs printed and duplicated my mate Scott runs a duplication company (and is cheaper than £100 for 100 mentioned above). Let me know if you would like a link.

Send me over the link please :)

Oh and bucket, whats the difference between vinyl and acetate? Hatcha really confused me on his Point Blank masterclass on that front :D

My uncle runs Alchemy Mastering in London, not sure if they do what you want though. Have a look on the site and I might be able to see if he can do you a deal.

You cut acetate to get a feel of what your vinyl will sound like and whether or not it requires any further mastering work. You can also use it to test how people react to the track without spending the money pressing a run of vinyl which might not sell. Most "VIP" tracks in drum and bass and dubstep are acetate / dubplates.

If you want to see a good example of the difference between a dubplate / final pressing, check out the difference between Kryptic Minds - Badman and the Badman VIP releases. I personally prefer the VIP to the final track.

As bucket says, it's not cheap. There's a section in the dubstep documentary Bassweight were Deapoh is talking about getting his tracks cut to acetate and they head to some London place to get it done. I can't remember the name of the place though. It's a must watch if you're into dubstep.

YO I GONE VINYL BLUT :D

tbh it seems a lot of hassle but if thats what you like cool
"
my honest op on that rubadub video listened to it just same thing repeated over drums dont punch you and the "yeah" near end pretty just a filler to try to make it different from start to finish. if it dont make you wanna dance or nod your head toss it in the bin.

Cheers guys :)

And DG, you do realise how old that is right? Have a look at my soundcloud, the latest track is more indicative of what I can do now :)
