Over in the USA, they've just upped the warranty from 4 yr / 50,000miles to 10 yr / 100,000 miles

I happen to have one.. Well the wife does, and the one thing that worried me on the car was the DSG going once the warranty goes out..

Looks like that's no longer a worry. Well done VW, at least to your US Customers.

VW are shysters. They only upped the warranty in the US because they know that they'd be faced with (more) class actions if they didn't.

In the less litigious Europe, I bet that they won't lift a finger.

Wait, what? Are DSG systems more prone to failure, than normal auto's?

no but they are more expensive, eye wateringly so if you need to replace it at your own cost apparently.

this is also true, in the US they'll sue for anything, and the courts will let them win.

In europe stuff like that just gets thrown out and they get told its tough luck.

Well in this case I kind of agree. Cars are pretty damn expensive and the manufacturers should do more to make them more reliable... Don't know about UK but a DSG replacement is around 7-8k... Imagine the emotional stress of being faced with a bill like that when your car is just out of warranty. Especally since you spent an absolute fortune in the 1st place. TBH its not well advertised.. I only accidently came upon it in a VW forum.. So i called VW earlier today and yup they confirmed... DSG is a big thing for VAG so they want to make a good impression and not get it off to a bad start.. It's possible its the same case in England ?

Dunno depends, warranties in the USA are much more readily handed out.. Most now give 10yr 100,000 on the power tran.. bumper to bumper is 3yr 36k on regular and 4yr 50,000 on luxury.

To make a counter argument (i.e. play devil's advocate)... why should a manufacturer be forced to do so? Nobody is forcing you to buy their cars. :)

Well if they're going to offer it in the US, then they should offer it here.

Do we get a lesser standard of worksmanship? I bet you VW would say that all the cars are the same, so why shouldn't we get the extra warranty?

Kinda reeks of hypocrisy otherwise.

Again to play advocate.. why should the US consumer get the extended warranty? It appears that VW are only extending the warranty because of threat of court action, and no other reason? I.e. they don't think it's necessary, and the customers obviously don't because they are still buying the cars.

VW are doing a lot of advertising lately and have even dropped the price of the Jetta over here. Maybe they want to expand more in North America and are trying to compete with the other markets.

Well i'd have extended it globally or not at all. As for the reason to do it in the US, well we can only speculate.

It's the fact they haven't extended it globally that makes me question the "validity" of any reason given. VW will want to have a good balance of customer service and profit (contrary to the popular belief that all companies just want to make money with as little customer service as possible), and given they are not globally increasing it says to me that they already think they have that balance.

Anyway I'm far from actually aware of what's going on.. just musing/passing by at 3am.

Before everyone goes getting upset, check with VW UK, the warranty probably applies there too ? (just a guess mind)
