Im going to get one soon, just wondering, what happens when you want to shut down the drives? like overnight etc

Do i just go over to the drive and switch it off at the back and thats it, no problems? in windows i have to eject it but how does this little box handle it?

i wouldnt mind having the drives on all the time but these desktop drives must use a fair bit of energy

A Seagate 7200.10 500 GB uses around 12 W at maximum. I figure that's typical of a modern drive.

I don't have one of the devices but I imagine you can turn it off when you're not using it since its Linux firmware boots in seconds. I bet you can also have it power down drives when not in use, perhaps with aftermarket firmware.

i read that it supports drives that power down/idle after time, but my drive only spins down/powers down when its ejected..

I have one gathering dust here somewhere. I don't remember what it did or didn't do by default but if you check out http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/Unslung/HomePage you can find an alternative OS for it and a large number of potential applications which can be run on it.
I bought it to try and use as a web server and never managed to get it working as I had hoped, hence it's being consigned to the techno-junk heap beneath my pinball machine.

It would not work with the power-saving freecom classic I had but worked fine with my external Western Digital drives.

I've got one!

Apparently you can set the hard drive to power down using the manufacturer's hard disk utilities.

I leave my hard drive on all the time. The electricity would be minimal using a Slug and HDD than leaving a full PC on 24/7.

My slug is running Debian Etch. You would have to unmount the drive before turning it off and remount the drive when turning it on. I'm sure you could automate this process though.

how much do you want for it? or is it broken?

Yeah i'd like it automated. I want to be able to flick the switch off on the 2 drives before bed, because i'll only use them for a maximum of 12hours a day. I dont like the idea of them being on for twice as long as the maximum that i'd need them.

If I can find it you can have it for nothing. It has been unslung though (effectively it's OS wiped and stored on an attached hdd as per the website I linked to above) so I am not sure how simple it would be to get it back to it's default settings.

Anyhow I'll see if I can dig it out and report back when I have found it.

Awesome, i'll give you something for it if i can rescue its OS, i'll read up on it now

I have found it and it is accessible through my browser so perhaps I have restored it to factory settings, I just don't remember. Anyway it's address will be 192.168.1.21 and it is secured by the impossible to guess combination of user admin password admin lol.
I don't want anything for it but if, once you have received it, you'd like to send me a chq for whatever it cost to post it, then that would be great. It was just sat gathering dust and reminding me that I was too dumb to get it working as a webserver :)
Send the details of where it needs to be posted to this address and I'll try and get it to you this week: roaduk(at)googlemail(dot)com.

Received it today, thanks a lot :D, i'll get a cheque out to you soon

Just have a question now, i get the impression that I need to have a spare usb flash drive to sacrifice to this device to run the new firmware on it. But all i want is basic NAS functionality. Maybe i read it wrong

hey i sent you an email, havent had a response, maybe you didnt get it. but i need to know who to write the cheque out to

To use it as a standard NAS you can use the fireware it comes with, no need to run a 3rd party firmware off a stick.. Thats my understanding of it anyway, but I use it for my PVR and have unslung it (with a memory stick).
