I know that this forum is mainly geared towards PC hardware enthusiasts, however I was wondering how many rail enthusiasts we have on this forum.

I've had a passing interest in steam locomotives and older diesels for quite a while yet. I am not interested in modern multiple units or collecting numbers etc, I am more interested in the historic stuff.

I'm particularly interested in main-line steam specials and live near to the GNER route. I frequently see steam locos hauling special charter trains between London and northern desitnations such as York, Durham and Newcastle.

Looking to build myself a model railway layout in the next few months. I'm selling my xbox 360 in the next month or two to fund the layout.

Anyways.... .My Christmas present from my girlfriend arrived today from an on-line retailer. I had to inspect it for manufacturing defects etc before she wraps it up.

Anyway, here it is in all its' splendour;

Pound coin next to it to put size into perspective

pfft too fidly :)

"O" gauge man here :) that said theres a big box of grafar sitting in me mums loft :)
need any advice/want a chat

msn in trust

Cool  I used to have a large OO-gauge setup in the loft when I was a kid, every time I go into a toy shop or other place that sells stuff I still get all dewy eyed and yearn for my old set back :( Luckily I have a 5.5yr old son, he'll be used as an excuse in the future to get another set or two :p

I would love to model in O Gauge myself, however space constraints and the cost of the rolling stock prevent me from doing so.

What locos do you have out of interest?

Ahh, very nice Union of South Africa mate :D

I used to be well into my Hornby 00 gauge trainsets back when i was 8-13, absolutely loved them and always had a large layout set up, all over the lounge floor :D

N-gauge is something i'd really like to get into one day, how much does a good sized set run at now?

You can get starter set with a transformer, oval of trackm, decent loco and four coaches for £110+

Eg this one here http://www.ehattons.com/StockDetail.aspx?SID=21301

Generally if you want to build a large and operationally complex layout, which is what I want to do you'll end up spending £100-150 on track alone.

N gauge seems to be a bit cheaper than the 00 gauge hornby stuff, if you look in the right places you can pick up coaches for £11 each and larger steam locos - eg Mallard for between £60 & £80. Diesels seem to go a bit cheaper. I've picked up a brand new deltic for £55 before.

HOm scale here (Swiss meter gauge). Used to dabble in OO UK stuff until I realised just how much better European stuff was. Then I discovered the Rhatische Bahn. :)

i always wanted a huge trainset in 'N' gauge, had a couple of '00' sets in the past but didn't have the time/patience/money to persue it further but they do still fascinate me lots.

Used to be crazily into OO. Still have an absolute shed load of it stored. Talking proper Dublo though, not any of this modern plastic rubbish. Inherited from my grandfather, and then added to in great numbers from specialist shops and suppliers.

I do actually have a fair bit of the modern 2 rail stuff, but it doesnt altogether interest me as much as the old cast iron 3-railed stuff hence me never getting into it.

Edit: Talking this generation of dublo, those LMS tankers go like stink!:

We recently converted our loft to allow our son to have a permanent set up. It keeps him occupied for hours and makes him the envy of all the boys in the road.

I used to have a very large 00 layout, I still have some stuff upstairs with no layout to run it on. 3 rareish sets as well - the APT set from the 80s, the Coronation Scot set with the blue Coronation and coaches and the Silver Link set with the Silver A4 Silver link and 3 matching silver coaches :D

I would have had N guage but they were were pretty rare at the time and the quality wasnt great.

But now Bachmann are making them the quality is great as that A4 shows.

Seeing this thread has me itching to start a new project but the wife would kill me!

pfft, all you rail nerds :p

I'm just jealous is all lol. I've got an OO gauge railway set in my loft(boxed unfortunately), it's just a simple oval at the moment, but I do hope to get some extra track and a board to set it up on, then look into getting more engines and stock. I really like industrial type stuff, my current one is a steam loco with a crane for goods yards etc, looks really cool heheh.
