Hey guys,

I have an interview scheduled for this coming Tuesday for a work data clerk role within Network Rail. In the interview letter that was sent to me it said that I need to bring my knowledge in Ellipse & Business Objects with me but I have never heard of them!

In the job advert that I applied to it said that I need knowledge in Word and Excel which I do have but didn't mention the aforementioned software so I'm assuming that they will provide training on them. I do, however want to demonstrate that I have looked into this software but the internet is rather scarce of good information. From what I gather it's some sort of data reporting tool?

Anyone here use this software?

Cheers!

I have just started to use business objects. Literally a couple of weeks. You are right in what you say are. It allows you to filter the raw data in our case from the telephony system which makes 11 million records every quarter. So BOallows you to make reports on many sub criteria and then export the result to five or so formats like excel pdf etc...

That's all I know really.

Yep BO - its analysis on data and its generally well used with customer relations data (telephone, email, face to face etc) but sure its used in other fields.

Its can be model based so you ''design'' flows of query's against the data pulling out the information you want to answer the questions usually asked by management etc.

I dont know to much about it besides what our company use it for. I deal with analysis on GIS (spatial) data and use other tools like FME etc as part of my job so thought i would add my two pence :)

Indeed, BO can be used to analyse pretty much any data as long as the model is designed for it. It's often also used for financial data.

Shouldn't be too hard to find out lots about BO. Company has been around for ages, now belongs to SAP and has a new name I think. Can be used directly against raw databases which required decent SQL and knowledge of the data model of the database or techies can create "Universes" which are basically user-friendly front-ends to the underlying DB - e.g. a universe called Customer might be created that holds all the fields relevant to customers but with nice friendly names instead e.g. "cust_id, cust_name" becomes "Customer Number" and "Customer Name".

Best bet tho is admit you know nothing about it as it was not in the original requirements for the job. Do NOT try to bullsh(t your way in.

Thanks guys, much appreciated.

I intend to say that that before I received the interview email I had never heard of it but then give a brief overview of what I understand it to be. The email definitely states Ellipse, too. Perhaps it was a typo?

Cheers.

Ellipse is used as an asset management type tool, it was what they used at a water company I used to work at ;)

Was used for all the work order type stuff, held the asset inventory, lots of stuff then plugged into that for scheduling etc.
