Anyone here play Magic The Gathering

Ah, I always used a red/black deck. Though I also found it just as much fun to just get all my cards out and spend ages building them into an awesome deck.

Then again, I enjoy playing EVE Online, so that says more about me than M:TG.

Can't remember the cards I used though, this was back around the Majora's Mask block. The problem with MAgic was that it moves fairly quickly. New blocks get released, older ones get taken out of tourney cycles, os you have to constantly keep buying. Not a problem for me as I just played with a few friends. Did go once to a club that met in a bar and got kerbstomped by their expensive cards, so never went back XD

If you can find a store locally that does the format "Modern" then you never have to worry about your cards rotating out of the tournament scene.

Otherwise its usually "Standard" which is the last years worth of Magic sets to keep the tournament scene fresh.

I've been to several places and been curbstomped. I like losing legitimately as I learn so much from what my opponent is doing, no one gets better by winning all the time :P

I tend to make a new deck every 2 weeks for our local tournaments, being the top of our leaderboard people will happily aim to take me down, so I always make sure I bring something new to the table. I love deck building.

So is the steam version worth checking out as an easy introduction?

As an introduction to the game, yes. It will give you an overview of how the game plays, and all the basics plus some more advanced stuff. However, to me one of the biggest parts of the game is building a deck from scratch, which you can't do in the Steam games. You pick a deck, and then have a limited set of cards which you can swap into and out of the deck.

I remember years ago I used to play online games with this free program. Don't remember what it was called, though it was really basic. But you could build your deck, and it could do everything such as tapping lands, changing creatures health and so on. You had to keep track of things manually though, but since it had the whole game database and it was free, I couldn't complain!

Theres magic work station, apprentice and cockatrice as free software that let you play MTG online. Alternatively there's Magic The Gathering Online which is the official MTG software for playing online.

Been researching since my last post! Apprentice was the one I used to use, though is pretty much out of use now since there were a load of ways to cheat with it. Just downloading and installing Workstation to see how that runs. All the talk of MTG kinda makes me want to see if I could run a sealed deck tournament for OcUK members using Workstation. Would anyone be interested?

sounds like a good idea, I'd be interested in getting involved! got quite in to magic during tenth edition, got absolutely stacks of cards, fortunately the sale of a few good rares meant they pretty much paid for themselves :D.

I got my deck builders toolkit today.

Got two mythic rares and a planeswalker card.

Tamiyo, the moon sage.

A quick ebay search reveals I could sell this card for more than this box cost me.

Whut?

My problem has always been having people to play with. My friends aren't really very "geeky", and I don't mean that in a derogatory way, just that I don't know anyone interested by this kind of thing like I am.

If I just turned up with my M13 Toolkit / Avacyn Restored deck at a local TCG gaming store (Harlequins in Preston is the nearest one I can find to Blackpool) would I be good to just sit down and play on their MTG night? Booster drafts etc seem a bit daunting right now.

I know your pain regarding friends not being nerdy enough. Perhaps two of my friends seem like they could be swayed if I really wanted to try and get them into the game.

Congrats, you just got yourself one of the money cards from the Avacyn Restored set. Lucky git!

I played for 12 months or so. Just a friendly warning: opening boosters is dangerously addictive!! I spent way too much money on random boosters and fatpacks every time I went to play. :(

The game is great fun but has a steep learning curve, imo. Building a deck from scratch is not easy but it's definitely rewarding when you win with it. If you're not a great player (like myself :p) you can basically copy and modify a pro players deck and have success with it.

When I was really getting into it me and 2 friends traveled 160 miles to Dundee to compete in a qualifier for the Barcelona pro tour event. There ended up being 10/15 people that showed and I placed 4th after a long day of playing. It was actually great fun but I just kinda lost interested shortly afterwards.

Oh and yes, some of the players definitely live up to the hyper nerd stereotype. :p For the most part the people you play with will just be "normal" but I'm not going to lie, I encountered some very strange people during my time playing.
