Im looking to get a decent video capture device or capture card for PC and record gameplay from PS4 and XB1.

Any recommendations for a decent one? Ideally one that can capture true 1080 at 60 and come with good software to do minor editing.

EDIT: Just to point out, Im not looking for streaming quality. Recording quality for editing is more important.

Not sure on the software side with avermedia, I know the Elgato has a decent suite for recording the games and the live rewind feature so you never miss anything is pretty cool.

Hi Neoglow,

I have used both the Elgato HD and Happauge.

I have been recording for something like 6 years now :D

I would recommend the Elgato mostly due to the ease of set up and software available with this.

The actual quality isn’t much different between most Capture Cards nowadays however i can confirm you will get 1080p 60 FPS with the Elgato.

Also i would read up on the best settings etc so you get the best quality available

Best practise is to record with Elgato software and then edit with another set of software ie: Sony Vegas / After effects or even both, depending on your experience and what you are looking for when editing.

Any questions please ask, hope this helps.

Cheers guys.

MrZen,

What capture device do you currently use and Ive been reading that some devices can capture 1080p @ 60 uncompressed video, do you know which can definitely do this?

Elgato Game Capture HD - Video capture adapter - USB 2.0 is what I currently use, it does give me the option to record at 60 FPS, but I don’t think it’s a true 60 FPS.

But its close enough, I get 1080P quality, at 60 FPS.

However if you want the 1080p 60 FPS recoding, go for the new Elgato that’s been built for next gen consoles, I haven’t used this one myself.

Just remember when recording this the files will be massive. lots of GBs. :)

You can choose to record uncompressed footage if i remember correctly in the settings but just remember when recording this the files will be massive. lots of GBs. :)

What I can do is have a look later tonight at my settings and post on here if you'd like?

I have the Avermedia ExtremeCap U3 an USB3 capture device. It captures in YUV 4:2:2 and you can either encode in high bitrate x264 with its included software or use software such as AmarecTV to record with other codecs or pass through to orb / xsplit for streaming.

It does require a fast cpu and usb3 in order to capture 60 fps at 1080p as there is no hardware encoding going on so the final quality is as good as the software you use to record.

Thanks MrZen, if you could post your settings that would be awesome.

MadMatty, Ive been researching lots this evening and I think Ive narrowed it down to either the Elgato HD60 Pro (PCIe card) or the Avermedia ExtremeCap U3.

I believe the HD60 Pro is capable of 60mbps whereas the normal HD60 (external device) is only 30mbps. The ExtremeCap can do 60mbps. Provided my rig can match the spec required for ExtremeCap recording at uncompressed 1080p60 at 60mbps then I am leaning towards this rather than the HD60 Pro which at this time does not offer uncompressed capture. I know uncompressed video takes up a lot of space but I would rather capture RAW uncompressed video and do the editing before compiling an MP4 where compression is introduced.

What software do you use to capture the video and maintain good quality? Am I right in thinking Sony Vegas and Adobe Premiere are good quality? The added bonus is the ExtremeCap comes with plugins for these apps.

For me, its all about quality and clarity of the captured video to edit and produce my own videos.

Depends what mood im in as to how I record it. I will usualy just use the aver software and record in h264 and edit with Videoredo (and save without any recompressing).

or I will use AmarecTV, record uncompressed into avi with a lossless codec (Lagarith) and edit with VirtualDub before encoding to mp4. or I can use Amarec to record with unlimited bitrate into high speed, low compression x264 (ultra fast preset, Single Pass - Lossless Rate Control) and again edit with Videoredo and then encoding into an mp4.

Forget the Avermedia Extremecap U3. It can only capture 1080p/60.

PS4 outputs 1080p/59.94 so there is a slight judder in the capture every 30 seconds or so.

Had a few cards over the years Roxio HD PRO which is let down by it's software, Hauppauge Rocket which is a great little device but upgraded to the Elgato HD 60 Pro as it saves me the time of doing Frame Interpolation to convert 30fps to 60fps

If i was buying now i would go with one of the new Elgato's

Roxio HD PRO XBox 360

Hauppauge Rocket PS4 with video converted to 60fps

Elgato HD60 Pro PS4

it is true that the Extreme cap rounds up 59.xx to a fixed 60
. Depends on the game as to if the extra frame insertion is noticeable.

That said the Extremecap is an old device and has since been replaced with the extreme Gamer HD USB3 only. One would think that particular niggle has been addressed.

Not really an issue when using it to record PC footage though which I find it very useful for as long as vsync is working properly and 60 fps can be maintained.

Examples of youtube videos using this capture edvice can be found on the 'world of longplays' channel. pc, ps3, ps4 and xbox360, xboxone videos as examples by various players. I'm and admin on the site and assist with the encoding.

Thats interesting, but is it the console that always outputs 59.94 regardless of game?

Its very hard to nail down a device that does exactly what it says on the tin. With all the differences of 59.94hz, 60hz, 30mbps, 60mbps, uncompressed, pass through etc etc etc Im still swayed to the Extremecap U3 even though it is technically older than other devices. Besides the lack of 59.94 capture and no pass through it does tick all the boxes.

I very almost bought the Black Magic Intensity Pro 4K but it has reviewed badly online so it put me off, unfortunately it looked like a good device with all the capture features but it appears its has driver issues.

Ive watched lots of youtube videos but unfortunately its not a 'true' way to compare due youtubes compression and the software used to make the video in the first place but of the videos I have seen, the Extremecap U3 seems to look 'sharper', 'clearer' in my eyes compared to the Elgato HD60 Pro.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I am running into issues capturing the PS4 Pro with the Avermedia Live Gamer Extreme.

It's that weird judder issue. REC Central reports a capture of 1080 / 59.94 , so that's good. In OBS I can set everything to 59.94 but the judder remains.

Is there really no solution to this?
