OK so following my ACL injury I'm running pretty freely which is good.

I'm also starting to get squats and lunges back into my routine albeit at low weights for the time being.

As my running is pretty much back to what it was pre injury I'm wondering if it's worth getting getting some ankle weights to aid with my overall leg work?

Has anyone here used them and think they're any good? They don't seem particularly expensive to could be worth a punt anyway but if anyone has any experience of them I'd be pleased to hear about it

Cheers

Paul

I used to use them when playing basketball to increase/improve my jumping ability and stamina. I used to wear them all day, and during the game. I'd take a couple of days off to recover and then start again. I gained in 6 months about 3 inches in jump height, but a lot more stamina too.

Its better to wear a weight vest isnt it? Puts less stress on your joints, or so ive heard.

I use jumpsols for an all purpose type of workout.

They have added over 6 inches in a month to my jump height and are weighted with 10lbs too so double up.

They're expensive but well worth it.

FF, do you think these would improve the strength in my knee if worn during badminton?

If you have an inherent weakness in the knee I'd check with a physio first. I never had problems with my knees and no more pressure/issues were caused. However as I'm sure you know basketball is a very stop/start/dynamic/explosive type of sport, similar in some movements to Badminton. If your physio doesn't see a reason why not, then yes it will improve your tendon strength. I started off on 0.5kg and moved up to 2kg.

I'm seeing a physio once a month, trying to recover from a knee problem. Will see what he says next time I go. Whereabouts did you get yours from?

I *knew* you were going to ask me that... I can't remember I'm afraid! I just did a search on the intergeek until I found something that suited me. I needed the weights to be removeable so I could change the amount of weight they had.

Any idea what I should be looking for in terms of weight FF? Having difficulty finding adjustables. How much of a difference do they make? Does adding 1kg/2kg make a big difference to begin with?

Edit: To apologise for semi-hijacking your thread Pablo, have a look at these?

Believe it or not it does make a surprising difference. I started off on 0.5kg for 2 weeks. Then off them completely for a week. Then 1kg for 2 weeks... off for a week etc... until I got up to 2kg.

The ones I had had little iron saussage type things that you could slot in. I think they'd go up to 3kg. If I still had them you'd have been welcomed to them.

How about these?

Scroll down to pretty much halfway, was thinking the 10lb (4kg) set as its adjustable? Might be better overall, was hoping for something a bit easier to fit under my socks though!

I used to put them over my socks but no one ever noticed them. Or you can get the "sand" ones and just buy a few of them at different weights.

Well no one commented on my weight vest idea so i did a bit of googling and it seems pretty widely accepted that using ankle weights puts more wear on your knee/ankles joints than a weight vest, a vest also allows you to go to a higher weight more comftably i should imagine.

Anyway, i wont bang on about it.

I discounted the vest as I thoguht it would be particularly uncomfortable when sweating buckets but I'll give it a look

I use ankle weights as part of my physio for a knee injury. Just for stretching and other static exercises, not for running around in.
