Ok so basically i am wanting to have a computer setup to stream media via cable to different TV's in the house.

Now i will most likely be using something like a WDTV Live for the connection of media to TV.

I was going to use freeNAS but its a bit of a pain to setup and something like MediaPortal looks perfect but...

Would i just install MediaPortal on the pc. Point it to my media and then plug it into the router?
Can i then run cabling from the router to a WDTV Live etc and it will pick up the stuff from MediaPortal or does it have to be another pc running MediaPortal?

There's a very detailed install guide over here
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1092168

Here are the basics:
You need a dedicated pc for each TV you plan to watch mediaportal on. It doesn't have to be a powerful PC. Current integrated graphics ought to be enough. Many people use Ion netbooks with tegra graphics, for example.

Most of the power of mediaportal comes from the plugins it has available. Fortunately, the streamedMP package includes the most useful ones (a beautiful skin, and the MP TV Series for handling tv series, and Moving pictures for handling movies).

After getting it setup, you'll end up with screens like these (though I STRESS, these are just examples- you have a lot of different ways of displaying your library):

The install guide above tells you how to install mediaportal (I usually skip the first part about codecs- I have mine set up how I like), then install streamedMP, then configure these key plugins. As part of this process, you'll tell the plugins where you media library is stored, they will then scan those locations and download media data for all your tv shows and movies.

Then, for each other computer, you'll repeat this process. The first time will probably involve a few false starts, but it's well worth it in the end.

Thanks mate.
Thing is i dont have the money to be able to put a pc in every room plus the electrical bill would rocket.

I think i will have to look at alternatives.
Thanks anyway.
