Hey

About to take on a job at an engineering consultancy (URS) and am leaning towards one of two posts. They want me, but i need to decide whether to go for:

1. Mechanical & Electrical - Building services
2. Highways.

I graduated this year from notts uni with an MEng in Mechanical Design, Materials, and Manufacture. The divisional manger seems to like me and really wants me to work in highways. I think it sounds pretty interesting but still think building services is more suited to me. Anyone here in building services and can tell me what they do, im not a Mech Eng student so i haven't done fluids and only done a little thermo ?

Only problem with highways is that for chartership id have to go with the civil body (ICE) and i can't verify that my uni course would allow me to do that as their website is screwed in that section.

cheers

Off to building services with ya! Highways is without doubt one of the dullest of the engineering specialisms. :)

I agree with AJUK, Mechanical & Electrical - Building services.

Much more opportunity and a more exposed background should you ever move career.

Im not an expert.. but i do work for a mechanical/electrical engineers company (im a tech there), im not 100% of all the jobs etc but they spend a lot of time on autocad (cading every wire, vent, plug socket, air con, cctv, basicallly anything that isnt a brick when it comes to contructing a building)

if you have any more pecific questions about the job i will ask one of the engineers for you...

Lol, it didn't seem as exciting as building services, but didn't seem too bad. But building services does offer more opportunities, especially in london where i intend to move with the mrs if she gets on a grad scheme, and i move offices or get a job down there too.

Gaz.... cheers for that, im ok on autocad but i only used it in my 1st and 2nd year so am quite rusty. I havn't used PRO E or solidworks, but was hoping building services didn't involve playing around on CAD all day long. Some computer modelling would be great to learn, and i really enjoyed a module in my last year called energy management. Pity the thermodynamics was badly explained and seemed impossible !

Ive been leaning towards building services all week and this seems to have re-enforced my thoughts about it. Manager was going to ring me next week to find out my decision but il go ring him now :D
