Just curious as I accidentally found some Metal Detectors to buy and wondered if anyone did this as a hobbie?

Anyone know much about using metal detectors?

I reluctantly got into a conversation with one in Barmouth before. He was very chuffed as he had found a box buried in the sand that was locked. After getting extremely excited and phoning his Mum (yes) to tell her the good news, he broke the rusty catch off and opened it up. We acted grateful that he was sharing his findings with us, even though we all couldn't give a toss and simply wanting to continue playing Frisbee.

Oh and the box was utterly empty. Like his soul I reckon.

hahaha

yeah its a bit lame tbh.... i like the idea of finding things etc, but i think in reality it would just be lame

The idea of finding ancient coins and stuff like that seems fun but thats about it, lugging the thing about pirating peoples land of bits and pieces seems cumbersome.

Wonder if I can walk into a shop, wave the detector over the till and claim all the contents as my find.

If you take it up, please don't do what the detectors at my local park do and dig holes and just leave 'em.

They leave the top piece of turf lying next to the hole; it really wouldn't be too much trouble to replace them.

So now we have small holes everywhere; just big enough for animal/human feet to go into when running around.

If I catch 'em at it they will be wearing the detector!!!

You can have great fun with them, take a large packet of iron filings and sprinkle around your beach, park and watch them think they have found someones missing millions.

Went metal detecting once (with someone who does it all the time) and got loads of used bullets
A good idea is to go to field or common or whatever, right after a funfair or something has been on. Like the next day.

I've seen to many important archaeological sites trashed by metal detectorists to have any respect for them

Even if many groups now try to claim they've mended thair ways and work in unison with archaeologists the damage has already been done.

As someone said further up the thread 'seeding' with iron filings used to be a good way to deter them but that's now showing to be a problem years later as it renders some forms of geophysics unusable :(

Haha!

This one time that I went metal detecting was a beach that had been used for training in WW2 so had lots of bullets just waiting to be found! (IIRC it was Brean nr Bristol)

There was a bloke doing some building work where I work. Ended up chatting to him as we boh smoked, and it turned out he also had a metal detecting shop and did it as a hobby (and yes he had a beard)

Turns out people were always coming into his shop offering him gold and silver finds worth thousands, but it's all kept quiet because of "treasure trove" rules.

So I'd suggest developing an encyclopedic knowledge of metal detectors, open a shop, and cash in on dug up booty from the nerds on the cheap.
