Anyone into their coffee gear?

Decent and a niche here and an e61 for a decade before that.

What type of coffee do you like? Are you a tinkerer or do you just want things to work ?

I used to be really into my coffee gear, but lots of work travel and a few other things made me lose interest. I still use my Chemex a fair bit and am really wanting to get another vac pot. My Hario one met an untimely end due to some ham fisted idiot (me) knocking it against the kitchen tap.

I need to get something for when I'm in the office, the coffee here is awful. Something simple and easy to clean up like a Kalita Kantan will do the trick I think.

Definitely a tinkerer.
Don't mind a bit of modding to get it to work how I want it to. I find it very rare stuff just works how I like.

I used to roast coffee for Rounton Coffee so have a lot of experience in the space.

Where are you based btw and how you finding your decent?

I'm light to medium roasts. Leaning more medium recently. Columbian flavour profile is my preference for espresso based drinks.

Non espresso drinks - I do enjoy a washed Kenyan.

How about you?

Can highly recommended the aeropress go. So quick to make a coffee and super easy to clean. I take mine into the office all the time and when I was a teaching assistant it was a life saver in the strict 15 minute break times.

I'm not a fan of Americano style coffee, I've had a few Aeropress brews and they're not my thing.

I forgot to mention, that I used to roast coffee at home for a while. I had an original Behmor home roaster but soon sold it on as it just made more sense to get coffee that had been roasted by a professional. Plus the smell of roasting coffee is horrid.

Yeah, I get that the aeropress is distinctly different to the pour over style coffees.

Home roasting does have it's appeal. I'm surprised you didn't like the smell! Anyone who visited the roastery always commented how nice it smelled.

Who you buying from recently?

Used to, I have tried a lot of coffee gear.

Started with the Mocha Pot, Caffetiere, blade grinder.

Then moved on to Chemex, Iberital Grinder.

Then added a Gaggia Classic, that's when i got all the bits to go with it, tampers, shower head upgrade, portafilters, shower screen, etc.

Then went to V60 for a while, and then got a Niche Zero, and now i use the Hario Switch 100% of the time. I've not turned on the Gaggia since Christmas.

Roasting coffee smells completely different to roasted coffee as it's being brewed. There's a bit of a burning smell as the mucilage comes away that I really dislike. I took to putting the roaster on the patio whilst it was running. I'd describe it as a mixture of grass and burnt popcorn.

I used to buy all my coffee from Has Bean, but I found that (and despite what they say) they're roasting their coffee darker these days and I'm much prefer a lighter roast. The last batch came from Rave Coffee but I'll often get some from Square Mile.

A former roaster! You'll be miles ahead of me then. I struggled for years with consistency when I had the e61 which lead me to gear up. Sometimes great shot followed by sink shot. Looking back could have been temperature swings you get from hxs or pick prep.

Leeds way an I live in the mid-mid dark chocolate plus territory hence the niche. As a black drinker I have been tempted to pick up a flat burr for more clarity but low priority right now. I sometimes get espressoed out and either go fruit bomb turbo's/allonge or v60 to break things up.

I'd say go lever for classic darker style roasts/capa crowds because of the higher flow rates and steaming power.

If you like to tinker and like clarity I can't think of a better machine that the decent tbh to suit your flats. Some massively varied profiles available and the sensors , technical data provide plenty of information about what's going on at all stages. Allonge, blooming , lever style, turbos etc... The heavy software does come with the odd bug though. Nothing game braking , setting change here or there or app update. Decent are quick to release updates though (owner has software background so that's his thing). Expensive bit of kit though and it goes up each year. They buy customers machines, refrub and resell these on the dispora forum. I lurked on there for a few months while I was deciding between a Bianca and the decent .

Any UK roasters or beans you'd highly recommend ?

Your preferences have me thinking the likes of Origin (their single origins). There are some very different roasters I'd recommend:
Abe & Co - one of the only in person Scott Rao trained roasters. Harder to dial in as it's lighter than I'd like but it's developed so you won't taste any roast defects.

Kontext Coffee - got a lot of interesting coffees as she has unique connections for green buying. (I find a lot of UK roaster get their green from the same place and it gets a bit boring).

Swansong coffee - only had one order but they are using a very new type of roaster that has rave reviews. Pricier tha. Most for this reason.

I'm Just getting 'into coffee'. I'm using a 1zpresso Q2, and the AeroPress. Dockside Roastery, Rave and 'Hasbean' for my orders

Maybe just a little, 2 espresso machines, many drip methods, aeropress, cold brew, siphons, funky scales, several hand grinders and 4 electric grinders.

So, yeah, just a little. ;)

I picked up a pack of Kantans today and they're ok, make a decent coffee but they're too small to be of much use. I'd need to use 2 of them and make 2 brews to get a decent volume of coffee. The convenience is great though.
