Anyone know anything at all about Scorpion 758 car alarms?

A friend of mine bought a 1989 Bentley Mulsanne S towards the end of last year, and I've been helping him with some of the jobs it needs doing. One of the major ones is getting the remote locking and alarm setup working.

The alarm is a Scorpion 758. If I put the key into the unit to turn it on, the car locks (as it should) and immobilises (also as it should) but the indicators light up and stay lit (rather than just flash on and off). The remote also does nothing once the car is in that state. You have to turn the alarm unit off again with the key and reset the central locking (there's a button to do this next to the fuse panels below the glove compartment) to do anything with the car.

I think the same unit was fitted to the Merc 190E of around the same year, so I guess it isn't specific to Bentley. Long shot I know, but has anyone ever come across one who can tell me a) what might be wrong or b) whether or not there is a newer unit that can directly replace it?

Thanks for that one whatleytom. Anyone got anything slightly more sensible to add or should I just take it as read that no-one on here has ever come across this particular alarm setup?

not familiar with the scorpion alarms, however I am familiar with a lot of alarms fitted to super cars and other luxury motors.
I know FACT that any of the systems i have fitted that the alarm module is seperate to immobiliser module and cannot just be substituted for a new one unless reprograming is done.
Also the alarm and immobiliser are matched using a sequence of button and ignition movements at intial installation.
I would personally try pistonheads and offer the question there.

If there is something wrong with the scorpion alarm unit there is probably nothing you can do with it.

But I would be more inclined to go for all the swiches on the car. Check for corrosion on all door contact switches and make sure a nice clean earth is there. Also check the boot and bonnet switches and all interior lights and door card lights because they will all be on the same circuit.

If you can find the alarm wire that connects to the central locking....one wire will probably close all central locking by use a pulse positive or negative (negative more popular).

Does the central locking work without turning the alarm on ??

Thanks for the suggestion whatleytom and bubblebobble, will do that in a bit (got to eat some delicious pork stir-fry first :)).

*Moangroan* - door contact switches are surprisingly good. Central locking works perfectly on the key* with the alarm/remote locking/immobiliser out of the equation. A company in Burton is looking at it next week to see if they can dope out the problem, but given how few companies want to do any in-depth work on a Bentley (they all seem to be terrified by it) I can't imagine that this outfit will dig particularly deep before writing the unit off.

The fact that it half-works is the irritating part :( Turn it on and something does actually happen. But it gets about halfway (i.e. locks the car, kicks the immobiliser into life) and then stops. Very odd.

* - well, it does since we got the drivers door lock to work at all at any rate....but that was a purely mechanical failure.

WEll if they cant do anything with it maybe diasble/unplug all the central door locks in each door and just test the alarm with just each individual lock one at a time.....may tell you if its a central locking issue.

Can you open the alarm unit to see if you have a dry/cracked solder joint or bit of corrosion inside.

On another thought...the relay in the alarm unit that flashees the indicators may have stuck or sticking.....are you anygood with a meter ??? lol
