Been thinking about moving, tried last year but our sale fell through. Going on the market in a week or two but just happened to take the family to Buxton for the day last week and we're now obsessed with moving there.

Our Manchester infalted house price money seems to go a lot further and as I work in Wilmslow, the commute looks reasonable.

So, what is Buxton like, it looks nice enough but is it rough, safe, quiet, noisy, run down?

These are all the things you don't find out until you move there!

Most places have good and bad areas..Buxton is no different, I lived there for about 6 months on secondment and enjoyed it.

Good sides: Nice setting, nice walks, easy access to the countryside, free spa water, pubs are okay.

Downsides: Shopping is awful, the commute to Wilmslow may look easy BUT imagine that in winter with snowfall, it's not pleasant driving and affects the trains and I'm not sure there is lots for kids to do.

If you have kids, check the local schools (No experience here sorry!) but you will get more bang for your buck on the housing front. I live in Stockport and you can easily see that our money goes a bit further.

The only experiance i've had of it (live in stoke) is razzing around the country roads near you... so if you've got kids, keep em in-doors cos i've got a tendancy to kill with my speed :p

My wife and I went today and you're both right.

The drive from Wilmslow was hair-raising but I wasn't ion the right sort of car for those corners! The local drivers did appear slightly bonkers as well!

The houses that looked bargains were invariably in run down parts of town but over all we still like it. We have 1 daughter and plan more but plan to use private schools (possibly Macc if it's good) so schools are less of a concern.

I am a bit worried that the price will still be beyond us for the houses we actually want though. A 5 bed stone Victorian terrace is only 220,000 but shoots over 300k in the nicer parts of town, it's the same everywhere I suppose.

Thanks for the replies, if anyone else would care to share their experiences that'd be great.

Can't you get the crime statistics etc off a website? I remember looking at a place I was interested in and I stumbled upon a website that had all the various statistics relating to schools, crime, hospitals etc.

It's quite a nice area, but be warned it's full of learner drivers (there's a test centre there) :).

I spent three months there a couple of years ago and really didn't like the place.

There wasn't much to do in the evenings, the pubs and places to eat are average at best.

It also gets cut off, I was there during January to March and we got sent "home" from work due to snow fall three times in a week. When we tried to leave we found all but one road was clsed and what should have been a 1 hour trip turned into a three hour drive from hell with driving snow and snow drifts on the "open" road.

I wouldn't go back unless forced.

Spent a week there, there is only one thing good about the place and that is you can off-road to your hearts content there, apart from that its boring.
There is very, very little to do in the evenings, the pubs and restaurants were nothing to shout about and the place is full of n00b drivers.
Locals didn't take too kindly to 'us', felt like [size=-1]Royston Vaisey.

All in all, not a great long term place.

its turned into quite a big student place lately so night life should get better, i used to work in a bar there. shops are like mini versions of what you get in surrounding areas like stockport. expect to get blocked in if it snows as it gets quite bad.

i dont live far away and go there quite often especially walking the dog around goyt valley and fernilee reserviour which has stunning scenery.

if you have any questions contact me on msn

Thanks, the lack of nightlife is what I want lol.

Sick of pub noise and drunk arses falling over in the street when I'm trying to sleep. Shame about the students, no offence.

It seems to be a nice little place with quiet roads and lots of stuff to do if you're an old git like me.

I live in Whaley Bridge which I'm sure you're aware is close to Buxton. I went to the Kings School in Macclesfield via the school bus every day. Perfect for your daughter! The commute to Wilmslow isn't bad from there either. A lot better than the route from Buxton, and you will find some very nice houses in Whaley. Plus we have a Tescos!

I love the roads around Buxton, although as has been said, for general town life, its not such a busy town, not a huge amount to do, but ever so pretty/quaint.

The commute to Wilmslow will be a swift and enjoyable one, so long as there is no snow/ice, the Macclesfield > Buxton road (cant & fiddle road) is prone to being one of the first to close come the snow.

King's school of Macclesfield is fantastic if you can afford to send your children there.

Ive lived in Buxton for the past 20 years so ask away :)

house prices range from £100k for a 2 up 2 down basic in most parts of the town. not just the bad parts ( altho the bad parts are not bad now)

Renting here IS expensive in comparison to the local wage wich is lower than city wages (if that makes sence) plenty of jobs as lots an lots of local viliages close by all with lots of history

yes it is a Uni / College town which altho caters for almost all courses from mechanics / it to the massive and country wide popular Cooking / Catering Courses

its a small town with virtualy NO imigrants the only non english people around here are shop owners or a few students there is no community other than English nothing like mancheter here (im trying not to be racist here but seeing a arab / black person in the town is not normal you go out on a weekend an theres maybe 2 in all the pubs)

crime....well few shopliftings if someone gets in a pub fight an say goes to hospital this is a big thing around here, murders / armed robbery doesnt happen

if you like hills / driving fast / off roading MTB's / skate parks / caving / bungee jumping / walking / running clubs / Green roading in landrovers / free running / bmx'ing / horse riding stables / trail bike riding and crossers / speedway / banger car racing / go-karting etc etc

all within a 5min drive most much much less.

The public transport here is a bit missing altho there is a bus every 30mins to Manchester Airport which costs about £6 return per adult an thats from 4am > 12 midnight

the bus's go from Manchester to nottingham with buxton slap bang in the middle / you can get a macclefield / sheffield bus also

if you plan on driving to macclesfield each day its a great road fastest ive done it was 17mins and the average (slow for fog) time is 35mins from Buxton > Macclesfield center

any more questions? :)

Brilliant thanks, we're looking around the 200-250 mark but flexible either side for the right house.

We drove around a lot (baby daughter left with grandparents ;) ) and seemed to find that Dale Road South-wards seemed a little run down and up Fairfield Road to the East of Buxton was also a little run down.

Green Lane was nice as was Park Road etc but no doubt completely out of our price bracket lol.

I truly apologise if I've slagged off were you live but correct me if I've misread any areas.

Any hidden-gem roads anywhere?

i know a couple of blokes who work on the door of 'the eagle' and 'mood' who'll disagree with that.

all in all its a nice place and if you walk down by the pavillion gardens you can literally imagine victorian people walking around in the past as it has'nt changed.

just remember buxton people dont take kindly to strangers :D
