Creative Audigy2 value, also tried onboard Realtek with Giga DQ6.

I think Vista is overiding the soundcard drivers & outputting what it wants, which is a very low volume at the rear.

Does anyone know a fix for this major Vista bug?

thanks

Ahh thanks I've eard of Alchemy & will give it a shot & get games work with >stereo, though was hoping for a hack/workaround to overcome 1 of many serious Vista flaws & play films in 5:1 AC3. Can anyone play 5:1 through HDMI as thats paid for by copyright material.

Your problem lies with the playback area of HD Video. I have PowerDVD Ultra going via AC3 to my SB Extigy via SPDIF. I know that the problem with my playback comes from the fact that HD DVD and Blu Ray default to DTS. SPDIF defaults to DTS and Creative only have license to use Dolby Digital and THX. The DTS format is available via a purpose built Amp. My Panasonic SA-HE70 plays back on both DD and DTS. with no problem via my onboard sound through my ADI processor.

Ahh.
I dont have the cash to go buy any kit atm :(
I can get software though.
Im using an analogue 5:1 amp.
I play mkv/wmv films which have AC3 encoded sound.

I think I may have to dual boot with XP when I play a game/watch a film, why buy Vista when its intentionally crippled like this so big cheese can make more money.

LOL, I tried the latest PowerDVD 7.3 & that bypasses ffdshow changes such as sharpness & still only plays stereo + centre speaker.
It gets the aspect ratio wrong, does not fill the screen in full screen even when the vid is the same size as the monitor, leaves the start bar/sidebar visible, I cant find where to turn off subs & it dont recognise mkv vids unless you rename them as wmv.
What an amazing HD player lol.

Can't comment on the BLU-RAY HD-DVD side, but I'm currently running Vista with an Audigy 2 and a set of 5.1 speakers and it works fine? I can give you the full spec if you like, but the main thing I did was get the latest drivers from Creative (hard to find I know, but persevere, and you'll find it!) I can control the volume of the front/rear via the actual speakers which helps, but when I leave the balance at 50/50 the front and rear are indeed balanced.
