Going through Gatwick tomorrow and tempted with a PSP for the flight, anyone know how much they are in Duty Free?

Well they *should be* the same price as a PSP minus the VAT (not as simply as taking off 17.5% as you would be taking of 17.5% of 179.99 instead of the original value).

However Gatwicks actual RRP may be higher to start with so you would be better off getting it from game or somewhere like that.

iirc, that would be (179.99 / 117.5) * 100, to get the value without VAT. Could easily be wrong tho.

That will give a close but slightly wrong figure, 179.99 * 0.825 will give the value without VAT (£148.49)

£148.49 isn't correct - since £148.49 + VAT is 174.47575. Reason being multiplying by 0.825 is essentially taking 17.5% off of the end figure (after VAT) not the earlier figure (before VAT).

Just divide the price WITH vat by 1.175! Simple

Adding VAT, none of this fancy brackets stuff, just multiply it by 1.175.

So the original price is £179.99, so the price without the vat is...

179.99 / 1.175 = £153.18

Where are you gonna charge it dude?

I just did ;)

Bought one at lunchtime, with Everybodies Gold, Ridge Racer and some puzzle game, came to £230, not too bad. It was the Giga pack too :)

Nice one Mat :) Enjoy it! I've just bought myself Tales of Eternia. I've been waiting for a decent RPG for a while so this should keep me happy.

As for duty free goods, I thought VAT and duty were two different things.

Correct me if i'm wrong but duty free as it once was doesn't exist anymore except in name, it was abolished a few years ago, however the shops still give a discount to drive sales.

Hence why most stores in airports don't give you a full 17.5% discount, i still find its cheaper to buy online.

17.5% would make it VAT-free, not duty free. When goods come into the country, duty is applied and then VAT (yes, you pay VAT on duty charges lol). Nothing that I know of is subject to 17.5% duty.

normal price minus 17.5% ??
or isnt it that easy?

that is bad maths there.

The actual price would be (normal price)/1.175

take this example

something (x) costs £100 before VAT, so with VAT, it would be £117.5

Your way would mean that it would be 117.5 - (117.5*0.175) which is £79.44, but the original price without VAT was £100.

EDIT/ Sorry, didnt read all the correction posts before i wrote this
