Anyone know how to boost Wifi signals?

I have a Linksys wireless DSL router feeding a signal through to my upstairs bedroom.

Got to shift the PC downstairs where signals are much weaker.

Is there a signal booster/device I can plug in which will increase the strength of my Wifi signals?

Not really. You could possibly get a second wireless access point to work as a repeater, but this will cut the speed of the connection in half.

There's a couple of things you could try, though. If you can change the aerial on your router, you could get hold of a better aerial with a higher gain, which could direct your signal more effectively... not guaranteed to work though. Other option is to get a router with a more powerful signal. For example, I got hold of a BT 2700HGV for a fiver. You have to flash the firmware, but after you've done so you can get it to put out a much more powerful signal than a standard router.

The bt and 2wire 2700 adsl routers are a good solution due to the adjustable wireless power transmitting, but dont helpo a lot of the problem is the power at *** other end.

if you have the usual stick antaennas is worth trying them in differnt orietntations. stright up the signal is doughnut shaped (more horizontal) ie more suited for receiption on the same floor, horizontal their can transmit better verticaly.

Can also get good results by placing reflectors (maybe in a corner.

Homeplugs are ideeal for this situation as well and are much more likley to be effective than buying antennas but you alos have the above pringle can option!

If the router + adapter permit it, replace the aerials. Standard aerials are usually 3dB gain, replacing with a 5dB or 7dB one will boost the signal. For a far greater signal boost on devices that don't move, look into directional antennae they focus the power in a cone rather than a full radius which means they sacrafice broad coverage (not needed for stationary devices) in lieu of greater range.
