My old man loves to regale us with tales of his fishing trips and how sea fishing is better then fresh water, yada yada yada.

Mum bought him a set of sea fishing rods with the equptment for christmas, in a bid to get his fat **** out of the house. So far this year, they've done nothing but gather dust.

I've got a few days off next week so I was going to take him beach casting, which is what he used to do. He isn't too keen about all this, saying he wouldn't know how to setup the rods etc, I sure as hell don't know what to do, last time I went beach casting with him was about 30 years ago.

Can anyone point me towards an idiots guide to beachcasting, how to setup the rods, where to go and what bait to use?

I'm in Ashford, Kent. I was looking at going to Dungeoness, which he always used to talk about, but I'm open to ideas about another location.

If only there was a place you could search for things like this and get loads of information for free.

Afraid I can't offer any other useful input personally, but hopefully something there will be useful.

Great time to go beach fishing now as the mackerel are all in close to shore, just check the tide times for where you plan on going and fish it an hour coming in and stay until about an hour going out, only tackle you'll need is some weights (Use old spark plugs if you haven't got any) and some swivels and feathers/lures which will be a couple of quid at any tackle shop or eBay. Ask any others fishing on the beach if you need any advice/help but if you can't catch a mackerel when they're in there's something wrong with you, they throw themselves on the hooks! :D

Fished Dungy a few times. Weird place. It feels like you are out in the middle of nowhere. Very remote. Caught a few there, mainly Whiting and Dab, but a few nice plaice and to my amazement about 10 years ago, a 10lb cod that fell to a nice big cocktail of lug and peeler crab. That was some nice eating. Got about 15 portions from it.
