Ive been given a old laptop which im using with a usb wireless dongle atm

But i would rather use a internal pci one.

Its a hp pavillion ze4800 or ze4801ea it has both numbers on it, ive looked on hps site for hours but i still cant tell if i can or cant and what one?

Anyone help me please?

cheers guys

sorry i meant mini pci which is what laptops use. dont want a pcmcia card sticking out the side

Google 'hp pavillion ze4800' It says you can, how about you take off the plastic lid on the bottom and look for the slot to confirm before using a well known auction site and spending £9.99 ?

yeah i gathered i could but still dont really know what i need to be getting.

Gonna be hard for some one to help as there are no links allowed for competitors~!

ill take off the bottom bit tonight when i get in.

Thanks

edit be even better if i can get a wireless card with BT on it as well:D

erm will any mini pci wireless card do? im led to believe i need to buy a aerial as well?

anyone help me?

You may find that if wireless was an option on the original spec of the laptop then the wires for the antenna connections may well be in place and you would then obviously just need to connect those to whatever card you fitted.

you need to talk to HP. if you open up the laptop it might void a warrenty, and if it does go bust they might not support you.
i do not think you will find a wireless pci card for your laptop unless its supplied by HP.
As a tip, when you talk to HP, if they try to troubleshoot your problem you will be there for a very long time. write down a question you wanna ask them and only ask them that, and stick with it.

didnt realise this would be so hard!

wij......ive looked in the mini pci slot and cant see anything?

UniqueID the minipci slot on a laptop is just like the pci slot on a pc where you can fit different cards, like the pc it has mini pci and mini pci express im sure any card will do. But dont have money to waste. If you look on the bay unique there are hundreds of mini pci wireless cards.

I can see why you struggled with HP's tech support.

Warranty will be fine unless you expect them to support your wireless card or it causes another hardware fault, worst case scenario remove the card. As for needing a card supplied by HP again this isn't the case. It'll take a mini PCI card, end of. Personally i've always used intel based cards when doing wifi upgrades on laptops (large number of Dell Inspiron's) as the driver support is normally spot on, Broadcom kit isn't that bad but my money goes to intel as the cost difference was insignificant.

Gavin when you removed the expansion port cover on the base did you notice two small wires (possibly sheathed up) with gold connectors on near the mini PCI slot ? They are the antenna leads and are standard fit on most if not all HP's that shipped in the last 5 years with the option of WiFi (and if it has a mini PCI slot that's a pretty good indication).

as avalon said, intel and broadcom are the best for driver support. the well known auction site will have one for you circa a tenner. usually easy to install, pop it in, plug in 2 x antenna's, put it back together, install drivers and robert's your mother's brother!

tis what i thought but apparently now an ebay seller told me you get different size mini pci cards!!!

What a blooming headache!!

Also i looked inside the flap and i cant see any wires.

sometimes they are taped away safe, usually 2, one black and one red (colours may differ) with a small gold coloured push fit connection on it. tell the fleabay seller the model and he should be able to help

MY old Packard Bell Lappy didnt have any wires either mine are just routed around the underside of the motherboard tray as i didnt have time to take it apart completely. and MiniPCI is miniPCI ther is no different sizes!

nope, there ain't any there....you may be able to get some, but then you've got to route them around the screen....

ahh blimey.....

All this because im trying to it for my step daughter. And if there are bits hanging off the back like the usb donglethats currently there its far more likely to get caught or broken.
