Hey all,

I am planning a trip to Cornwall in August for me and the Mrs. We're Looking for self catering/cottage kind of place for 1-2 nights. I've not been to Cornwall before so unsure about which area we should visit, also not sure on where we should stay.

Any suggestions then?

Newquay is by far my favourite place to visit. It's has a lot of shops and a load of beaches, there's also a pretty nice bar called "The Walkabout" that serves kangaroo if you fancy trying something different. There's also the Blue Reef Aquarium, which is just a 2 minute walk from The Walkabout.

What sort of activities would you be planning on doing whilst there?

Look at St. Ives, it's a lovely little town and me and my wife have visited there three times now, including to get married. It does depend what you want to do as it is very different to somewhere like Newquay.

St. Ives and surrounding countryside is gorgeous. Mevagissey is an awesome little fishing town. And Marazion is well worth a visit to see St Michael's Mount.

<3 Cornwall :)

If you want to surf, you want the NW coast, if not then it doesn't really matter. Eden Project is worth going to if you like that kind of thing :)

I am originally from Penzance/Newlyn. St Ives is nice for tourists but watch out for the aggressive seagulls that will dive on you and snatch the food from your hands. Newquay is much nicer, and quite a bit bigger. St Micheals Mount is definately a must if you are going that far south west. Wherever you end up you will get your wallet raped. Cornwall is a very expensive place for accomodation, especially in the peak months.

For Fowey and Eden Project area we stayed in a place called Green Acres Cottages, they were decent and there is even an indoor pool. They are on sale on secret escapes right now for the next 4 days but there is a 3 night minimum. Depending on what you're interested in there is enough in the are to keep you entertained for a 2 or 3 night stay, but I think there is more going on further west.
The same people also own a bunch of other stuff, a hotel and other self catering apartments in different areas. I haven't stayed in any of them but they seem reasonable - breaksincornwall.com if you're interested.

Spent two summers near Newquay when I was 11& 12 when one of my sisters lived in St Columb.

Her husband used to deliver pasties and pies around Cornwall and I would go with him sometimes and really enjoyed it. Down to the Lizard and Lands End, Praa Sands and St Ives, Mevagissey. Oh the memories.

Probably all changed now but 30 years ago Fistral beach was lovely.

I've been to treyarnon bay/constantine bay, just up the coast from newquay. Very quiet and peaceful, but not far from newquay if you fancy a visit and walking distance to padstow. Good surfing there too (there's a shop in constantine bay) without the crowds.

Don't listen to those who suggest St Ives, its full of inbreeds and halfwits :p St just is quite welcoming of strangers...

Heading down to Porthleven myself in a few weeks. Luckily have some friends down there with a converted hay-loft they let me use for free.

Lovely part of the world.

One of my very favourite places :)

Stayed near St Agnes in 2011. St Agnes is nice but very small. A couple of very nice beaches nearby are Chapel Porth and Porthtowan - the latter has a bar almost on the beach which does good food http://www.blue-bar.co.uk/

Stayed near Perranporth last year. Another great beach and a decent resort with surf schools and the like. Think of it as a quieter. more family-friendly version of Newquay and you'll not be too far off. Don't be expecting too much nightlife, although there is a decent pub that does have bands on etc literally on the beach!

As others have said, Marazion and St Michael's Mount are well worth a visit. Falmouth has a decent beach (Gyllyngvase) but I'm not so much of a fan of the south coast. There's several different cycling trails you can do which follow the old mine railway routes (Mining trails) http://www.cornish-mining.org.uk/sites/default/files/Mineral_Tramways.pdf I did the coast-to-coast trail in 2011 (Portreath to Devoran and back) and the 'Great Flat Lode' trail last year.

One thing I'm tempted to do when I go back in September is kayaking: http://www.cornishcoastadventures.com/

There are usually activities going on all over Cornwall over the summer, such as boat races, fish festivals (such as the Newlyn Fish Festival). Try and make sure you get somewhere with internet access (or at least 3G) as it helps immensely with planning days out!

HTH! :)

Newquay is one of the worst places in Cornwall I've been, it's ugly.

Go stay near Polzeath beach, padstow is awesome which you can travel to by a little ferry from Rock. There's a lot of stuff within an hours drive.

About 30 years ago I used to go on family holidays there too, particularly to the Lizard and Lands End. I loved it down there.
