Anyone know much about Metal Detectors?

Hi guys,

I'm wondering if anyone can lend me a knowledgeable hand here. I'm currently looking for a metal detector as a gift for my father's 50th. Now he's always wanted a metal detector, so this year we figured would be best to get him one.

Simple problem, not one of us knows much about metal detectors, and thus I don't really have much of a clue as to what I should be looking for in a metal detector, or what's considered best brand etc.

So I was wondering if anyone can give some heads-up, or even point me in the direction of a reputable company(s)?

We're currently looking at a budget between £150-£200, if that gives any assistance.

Hopefully someone knows more than myself, which can't be hard.

Thanks
Arran.

Does he sport a beard? I believe the law states that nobody is allowed to operate a metal detector unless they have a beard. And possibly sandles.

Its over 30 years since I had a metal detector - had one as a kid, brilliant fun. In those days C-Scope and Garrett were two of the bigger names.

I think you can get Metal Detecting Magazines in WH Smiths - might be an idea to see if you can get hold of a copy and see what they recommend or at least look at some advrts / reviews.

Garrett Ace 250 Metal Detector £173

From the Rain Forest. :)

I'd agree with that too, cracking machine for the money.

I am a total detector geek, i have a XP Goldmaxx power, but before any of you start.....how many can say that their hobby would pay for a brand new superbike after only 1 years worth of finds? :p

P.S. Viking do some very good machines at a price, they are excellent performers on small 'hammered' coins. Simpler than the Garrett machine too, but not lesser featured as such - just easier to use imo (i used to sell them) : http://www.metaldetectors.co.uk/vk20-metal-detector-c-249-p-1-pr-16138.html

I do think the Garrett is a slightly better all-rounder though, certainly much better for beach combing if he intends to do that.

P.P.S. make sure you use headphones!!!

I have always wanted a metal detector. Since a teenager! 46 now and still not got one. I may invest in one as i love history / archeology etc (plus i would love to find a hord!)

Minelab are very good, I have one on the bay at the moment. We have 3-4 of them around the house, they are not the cheapest though.
