Anyone know of a portable external power supply i can get?

If all you want is to test the range of your wireless connection then I'd go with Skeeter's idea of borrowing a laptop from a friend, if you really want to do it yourself then buy a few long extension cables and daisy chain them so you can just take your PC away while it is plugged in. It will be probably cheaper, easier and more likely to supply stable power than trying to pick up a UPS and your PC while you wander about.

Guys,

Can you please quit with your replies on how it's stupid, i just need to know if it possible to do with UPS? As i also got a DIY project that i don't exactly want to talk about which the only way i could work this project would be with a UPS i believe, no laptop could ever work?

Thanks for the replies,

I was thinking of not bothering with that weibetech hotplug and instead wondered is it possible to get a UPS and recharge it first but then disconnect it from the wall mains and plug your use PC into the UPS only for several minutes max 90 seconds to get power from the portable battery inside the UPS. Then take the UPS and PC while still plugged in and switched on to a mains outlet and plug it in for continuous use of the PC from the mains?

Is this possible? So again so you know what i am saying, i don't want to confuse you, the first time the PC is plugged in i want it to get it's power from the UPS's portable battery all the while the actual UPS is not plugged into the mains and then once i plug in the UPS to the mains out let while the PC is still on, is this possible, this way i wouldn't need a wiebetech hotplug, that's good if my PC is plugged into the wall and i need to get it off the wall while the PC power is still on, but right now it isn't on so can the first way i describe work?

TIA

sure it'll work

you'll need a big UPS device and a tesco shopping trolley to move everything to another room

edit: even if you buy an UPS, you'd S T I L L have to disconnect PC's power from main, i cant see the point of your silly project

I don't know what sort of secret illegal project you are carrying out, but a pda will be cheaper than a ups and will be so much easier.

but people on this thread said you can get a UPS the size of a brick, so Bonjour why are you saying their not portable?

And can someone please give me the link of where on overclocker the plexus UPS is for £15 i cannot see it?

thanks

We have many UPS's at work.

A UPS designed to keep a couple of servers up for 20 minutes - just long enough to successfully power down - weighs at a guess over 40kg.

A UPS the size of a brick will not get you very far at all.

The size of a brick and the weight of a car!

I only need a brick as i need to be powered for only like 90 seconds max

You can't see it as OcUK don't sell it, and therefore we cant link you to it. There are other shops out there, so just stick it in your search engine of choice.

PK!

Hi misterPK

Thanks for the reply

Okay i found it someplace, thanks

Just to verify is it called the Plexus MV 500VA UPS that comes in white or black? I found it for £14.99 including VAT + £4.79 for delivery. Do you know if you've seen it anywhere for £15 with delivery?

It says under the back up/ run time. Half load and full load. Could anyone tell me what they mean by this, from the site selling it i found it says that half load max 15 minutes and usual 10 minutes while full load says 2 minutes, what does this half load and full load mean?

another site i found has the Plexus V 500VA UPS with LCD Screen & AVR (Inc Intelligent Shutdown Software) which is priced at £18.99 and they say The Plexus V UPS is small form factor (L x W x H 19.5 x 12 x 30.5 cm), so can neatly and easily be stored on your desktop or out of the way. That means their not that heavy. Would you say this is better than the £15 one?

Thanks in advance

which ever way you look at it, its still a waste of £15, time, and effort

I can see a thread in a few weeks:

"Help, I droped my PC while carrying it and a UPS, now it wont boot!"
