Anyone know the difference between the X1900 and the Xbox360 graphics chip?

The both have 48 shader pipes. Any technical dude know any differences because microsoft has done a damn good job with the graphics in the 360. I know the memory is slower as well.

The 360 has slower core and memory speeds, and the 512 is shared between video and system. Having said that, the 360 chip has a unified architecture, which is not due on PC's till the R600, plus is had 10megs of embedded dram. Also all games on the 360 so far (except COD2) are rendered internally by the ati chip at 1280x720 (720p), but there is hardware in the 360 to resize to 1920x1080 interlaced. I play all games at this res, and interlacing or not, it looks fabolous on a Dell2405FPW with only tiny borders as the native res of the 2405 is 1920x1280.

The Xbox 360 chip, claled Xenos is completely different to the X1900. It is a unifed architecture- those 48 "pipes" (you shouldn't call them pipes) act as both vertex and pixel shaders. The architecture is very complex and is not fully known.

The X1900 has 16 "pipes" with 16 ROPs, which can do 32 non-colour (e..g depth Z pixles) pixels/clock, 8 vertex shaders (I think), and 16 sahder engines, each shader engine has 3 ALU units.

The Xenos chip is clsoer to the R600 in design, but the R600 is likely to have the equivalent of 96 shared shaders units. The X1900 is a lot more powerful than the Xbox 360 chip with a lot more memory and memory bandwidth, but is less efficient.

The PS3 RSX chip is very similar to the Nvidia G70, but with less memory bandwidth.

the memory is faster on the xbox, since it has 10mb of embedded dram that runs at a gangster speed hence providing the xbox with features like AA with no performance penalty.

And for everything that doesn't fit in memory, like the 300Mb of textures you are limited by the memory speed.
