Hi,
Soon to have a more capable pc and was trying to find a war rpg that i had a demo of back in 99/00 but can't think of its name.

You had an army, tanks, snipers, mortars etc which you positioned as trying to defend / move across a territory.

One side was russian, can't remember if that was the computer or not but it had speech in the game with that accent.

It was rather addictive to play, one of the first i'd like to add to my collection if i can track it down.

Any ideas please?

That's right The Running Man, think each item had an arc around it to signify the direction it would fire / defend too.

Cool, thanks TRM, Close Combat 3: The Russian Front. Didn't recognise the game packaging but the screenshots look familiar. Might have the demo on a pc mag cd somewhere, at least i know what i'm looking for now. Can see if they got a copy in the game exchange place when i next go in to town, id imagine it would be quite cheap now :D

In close combat you go unit by unit. Every man in a squad has his own health, morale, ammo and specific weapons and armament.

Your tanks and at guns might refuse to fire at heavy tanks stating their armour is too thick and your conscription might just giveuup and surrender themselves if they aren feeling up for it.

When you can finally buy a panther its total win, until it fails to start or becomes tracked in the mire rendering it immobile!

There's 5 games in the series. 3 i think is the best as it has great units, maps and req system. Tanks tanks tanks i love it. You might have seen the packaging from another of the games. There's a real big set of mods out there.

Make sure you patch the gave and get real red mod or something installed.

Lol on amazon it 23 used 59 new for a 12 year old game...i have 3-5 all genuine pc version.

Haha yes i remember some of the troops refusing to fight if they were pushed too hard, outnumbered or too far away from higher command. What does patching do & real red mod? Was there ever a compilation of the series you think or just sold seperately? I think i remember being quite surprised when playing it that it was made by microsoft.

Hm well its become a rare game but rereleased by matrix games as cross of iron for 26 quid as a download.

Patching is for reliably so it doesn't crash as much.

Real red gives better character sprites and updates unit information and sounds. It leaves the main campaign alone but improves everything in it.

You can get whole other mods like golden juno sands etc which give you alternative campaigns to play based on user made campaigns and maps.

I downloaded everything i know from here:

Good stuff, will come back to this thread when i set it up. Was expecting it to be in the bargain bin by now, but saw it on amazon too. Is CC3 and Cross of Iron intereoperable? I mean does the latter still use the same patches etc? Do they have an online player function and if so can a player with CC3 play someone with Cross of Iron?

Thinking of a tactical WW2 strategy-RPG hybrid reminded me of Silent Storm games.

WTH happened to that franchise, it was glorious?!

Combat Mission is another tactical combat simulator that I miss profoundly from the "old days" although it seems like there is a recent sequel, "Combat Mission: Battle for Normandy", that I haven't got around to play yet.

Yeah they were great games. There were three set in the Silent Storm universe - the two sequels being Hammer & Sickle and Sentinels. There was also a game using the Silent Storm engine that was based on the Russian film Night Watch. I'm not sure whether Nival made it or just licensed the engine. As far as I know there has been nothing else.

I don't think its interoperable. Most patches and mods have been ported to cross of iron. Id recommend 3 or coi over any of the previous game versions. I used to play religiously i have nearly all mods and maps for 3-5.

No other game comes close. Modern times though i play company of heroes. Its faster and more arcade style but no other games come close and ive tried most.

guys, you should try Wargame : European Escalation. It's based on the cold-war era but it reminds me a lot of Company of Heroes. Shame that the infantry can't enter buildings!

I'll keep an eye out for CC3 or COI but CEX don't have it at the moment, and I doubt Game will have it but will look if passing later.
