OK so I found these two 3.5mm ? jack connectors ...and I'm assuming they are to go onto to each end of an Optical Lead ?....but I'm not sure what or why I would use them

thanx :)

They are for optical cables, some devices (like mini-disk players) take optical inputs or outputs with that end on it due to size constraints.

Some soundcards have them so that the manufacturer can fit a standard jack and an optical out in the same place, it's usually done on cards that are low profile, or that have a load of outputs.

It does look similar to a standard 3.5mm stereo socket. If it glows red internally it's called Toslink.

Most surround sound recievers, and indeed a lot of modern stereos include such a connection.

imho one of the better connections if you want to make use of surround sound through your stereo.

Yeah I do actually have an Optical lead ...but the only optical Out/In connection I have is in my Creative Z , as my speakers are Logitech 5.1 ...but they have no optical connection sadly....cos I would like to see how different it would be
