MY friend has a external drive with a strange connector type. anyone know what it is?

Looks odd, I see where Stulid is coming from... And it may just be the picture... But to me it looks like there is solid plastic on the left of that connector AND on the right... With just 4 'grooves' cut out... Is that the case?
 
Its snapped off from the laptop?

Compare the left to right port and you can see the plastic bit is still intact on the right port.

That broken off piece of plastic is now wedged in the cable and the four contacts are now bent out of shape in that port on the laptop.

That's what that is. The little symbols on the edge of the laptop next to each of the ports indicate they are USB. I've broken 2 USB ports on old Computer cases in the past, its led me to think that they should make the Plastic used in them a little stronger. Needless to say that the port will only work with that cable now & eventually will stop working altogether (In my experience anyway).
 
that is the part from the USB port you connected it too on the laptop

see this quite a few times with the USB sensors my work supply dental practices. you should be able to remove the black bit and it be OK but the USB port is knackered
