My car uses that light for low hydraulic pressure/fluid, and a similar light with a P in it for handbrake.

Wahey, the Vauxhall ECU error light! Was my best friend for a while when I had my 1995 Cavalier.

It means something has gone wrong somewhere, and the car is in "limp home mode". You'll probably find that it is giving really bad fuel economy with it on, not accelerating very well, and if you try and rev the engine higher than 4000rpm, it won't let you - will feel like hitting a brick wall as the engine stops revving.

Ah don't remind me, had hell with my mum's vauxhaull corsa with that bloody light. Cost £400 to sort, turns out it was the idler valve, or something like that

That light comes on on my Astra (94 as well) when drivng, usually when going uphill but will normally go out after a minute or so.

Other than that there is no symptons, fuel economy is the same, even passed it's MOT so in my case I'm guessing dodgy sensors.

Been like that for 7 months :o .

Jokester

Have you noticed anything wrong with it since it came on?

Does it use more fuel than normal, does it idle ok, does it rev ok, any strange noises, etc?

Is the average age of people who have posted in this thread 12?

Its possible that the MOT station removed a sensor to check emissions or something and have forgotten to put it back. It is there duty to rectify the fault if it was NOT there when you gave them the car
love this the guy insults people for not knowing what somethign is then makes a completly stupid assumption. During an mot test a tester is not allowed to adjust/change ANYTHING on your car, it has to be tested as it is driven into the mot station, therefore they will not remove anything unless work was asked to be done and this will be done before the test or after a failed test.
DAMN 12 year olds!
and as has been said it is an engine management light

and on 99% of cars it works as a brakefluid/brakewear light too, it will come on when brake fluid is low or the sensors on the pads are low and shorting on the disks. So it has 3 functions
1. Tells you when the handbrake is on used when the vehicle is stationary.
2. Tells you when your brake fluid is low usually indicating brake wear as the pistonshave to be pushed out using more fluid.
3. If someone has topped up yorubrake fluid rather than changing the pads on some models they will have a sensor that when the pad gets low it will also trigger this light.
however thsi can be down to manufacturers sme use a seperate light with a P in the middle fo rhandbrake others just use one light with an !.

SO OMG what a stupid assumption
