Anyone left a carear in IT for something else ?

16 years in IT here and I still enjoy it.

Wouldn't like it if I were still in a support role though - support sucks bigtime.

Luckily I scaled the ladder pretty quickly, helpdesk -> desktop support -> 3rd line server support -> infrastructure projects and now a mix of infrastructure and project management.

Work is easy, pay is reasonable, pressure is minimal.

What the hell is health physics?

It's mainly about monitoring radiation levels at nukular facilities, but there's opportunities with the MOD and oil industry as well.

Yeah, after 6 years in I.T. (support for 2, then database management, then application development and change control), I got totally disillusioned with it, and went off to fulfill my lifelong ambition of being a writer instead. Writing for an online motoring news site right now, but am also getting involved with selling pieces of work on a freelance basis. MOney's tight, but I'm a hell of a lot happier than I used to be. The change in me is almost shocking to some people While its hard to leave an established career behind, you can always go back to it. Missed opportunities are harder to deal with imo

Any advice on getting into freelance writing k_c ?

Currently stuck in a dead end job, applied for voluntary redundancy (they are getting rid of almost a third of our workforce) but learned today they won't let me go :(

Seems a few of you moved in complety different directions, I have no mortgage, wife etc nothing really holding me back, could do anything I suppose just need to find something that motivates me which is hard...

Have a look at Kilmarnock College mate, they do a lot of (short) courses that can lead into well paid work. There's always offshore work too, ideal for a young man with no ties, hard work but very well paid.

Pretty much. The official qualifications are City and Guilds Stage 1/2 in Radiation and Safety Practice or NVQ level 2/3, or equivalent so they ain't looking for rocket surgeons. Here is the first Google result, that's an above average salary it quotes though. Even if it turns out to be crap, I've not wasted years of my life chasing some pipedream.
