Hi all,

Going to Wrexham for business, and the other half is going to come up and stay in the hotel with me. I'll be working during the day, so which is better for shopping etc, Wrexham or Chester?

ta!

For big stores like Marks and Spencers, BHS, etc., both of them are about the same.

Wrexham opened a large Retail centre called Eagles Meadow a few years ago and has quite a range of stores, but they're the same as any other faceless Town Centre up and down the Country.

Chester on the other hand looks nice - has far more old buildings / restaurants etc., and also far more individual type stores. Quite a bit more upmarket as well.

Both have been hit a little by the recession since there are quite a few empty shops in both towns.

Both Town Centres have their problems and I find the shop staff in Wrexham far friendlier than the ones in Chester.

I would suggest Chester overall since it looks a lot better and there are some sights to see. Don't give her your Credit card though, since it is easy to spend a fortune in Chester :)

Both are ok really, but Wrexham isn't really a tourist town. Chester is, if you've ever been to York it is a bit like that really. Tudor Buildings, Cathederal, Good Jewellers, Grosvenor Hotel, Roman remains, some excellent cafe / bars and restaurants.

Thanks everyone.

Can anyone recommend a hotel with spa in Chester near the town centre (as I'll have the car).

Have been looking at the Mill Hotel

edit: the Grosvenor is out of budget lol. I get £100 a night for the room via work

I used to live right behind The Mill and know plenty who have stayed / eaten there. Most seem to like it. Always quite busy right on the canal and a hop away from town centre. Good facilities, too. Harkers pub just up the canal too which is a cracker if you like good beer and food.

Queens Hotel is OK too down by the station. I lived in there with work for about 10 months...well, so in the end I kinda hated the place...but it was good for a while :)

Hi plainsong, the Queens Hotel is the best western? Does it have a swimming pool and spa? Thanks

Hey

No, nothing like that, just a crappy little gym. Food is better but can be expensive. If it's facilities you're after The Mill would be miles better.

Best Western yup.

Mill Hotel is a nice place, staff are friendly and it has a good reputation. If I recall correctly it is still run as a privately owned Hotel rather than being part of a multinational chain.

As Plainsong has already mentioned it is near to Harkers Bar, another great place and the Hotel itself is literally five minutes walk from Foregate Street which leads directly in the Eastgate / Bridge Street area which is the main shopping Street.

I've lived in Wrexham for 39 years. It's <insert swear word of choice here> for shopping. The council in their infinite wisdom, opened 3 shopping areas in completely different places, which totally killed the town centre, which is now full of pound shops. Even the over saturated high street pubs are slowly closing now, leaving the lower end shops in the retail area. The new shopping area is okay, but as you're a 20 minute bus ride away from Chester, just go there. You can do some sight seeing and wander around the walls too.

Oh, it's even better if you shop online. You don't have to deal with the chavs in chester. Avoid the night life in Chester. Even the people that live there come to Wrexham, which tells you all you need to know.

Wrexham really is like a poor mans St Helens these days. It's a shame as it used to be very good only 10 years ago :(

So shopping in Chester, night life pretty much anywhere else :D

Wrexham night life is even worse than Chester. I know of nobody who goes from Chester to Wrexham for a night out, they'd need body armour!

That's complete rubbish. In 20 years I've seen about 3 fights in town. In Chester I've witnessed rolling fights through the streets, and my mate who works with the AA witnessed a massive rolling fight only 2 weeks ago.

I used to go around Chester for a night out as it USED to be a really good night out if you went to the middle/upper class areas. They weren't snooty, just nice and polite. Then the chester chavs found them and ruined the night life. You can ask pretty much anyone from the area and they'll say the same. They'll either come to Wrexham for the music scene, or go into Oswestry. Anyone that doesn't wear burberry, have orange tans or have an IQ of less than 10 will not enjoy Chester ;)
