I have the opportunity to transfer to the University of Oklahoma for year 3 of my engineering degree, beginning September, but for one reason or another have been given the sum total of 4 days to make up my mind :(

This comes having been declined places at the likes of Texas Austin, Uni of Maryland and Georgia Tech because of a mass of applicants this year. While the opportunity to study in the US for a year seems like a great opportunity, and one which I have been looking forward to for some time, OU doesn't seem to be anywhere near as good at the other Unis (not on paper anyway). I'd rather not jeopardise my 4th year studies in Sheffield because of a lax 3rd year doing sod all, even for the experience. I was hoping some people here might be able to give me more of a personal perspective.

So, opinions anyone?

I've never met anyone who's regretted travelling or seeing the world. What does that tell you?

(The answer isn't that I haven't spoken to many people :p )

Mine doesn't count, but I'm going, haha. Well, I'll get marked/do all the modules on my year abroad/etc... so will officially get results from whichever institution... but the marks won't be used to calculate my degree classification in Sheffield. Obvs I can still say I did x, y and z module, doing amazingly well (:p), though.

It's because there are twenty seven destinations, so it'd be really hard to translate all the year abroad marks into Sheffield marks fairly.

i would probably go anyway, like you are.

enjoy it. you wont get many more chances to spend a year abroad.

I'm at Sheffield, too... and I'm going abroad .

Does your year abroad count towards your degree?

What course/year are you?

Ye mine does count - one of the reasons I'm worried about the quality of teaching over there. Still sitting on the fence atm.

Ye I'm sure I'd get better grades at the lower ranked Uni, but then the problem becomes about whether my knowledge is of an adequate level for 4th year success. Doing the study abroad option changes the degree classification weighting. 3rd year becomes less important and 4th year becomes worth something like 50% of the degree :/

Are you allowed to distribute that PDF? Would you mind forwarding it to me if possible?

It's obviously a personal decision as well. I know a lot of the uncertainty is sourced from bitterness about missing out on the other Unis and not being able to live somewhere like DC for a year, but there's sod all I can do about that really. OU has its own appeals. It's one of the most active tornado/supercell spots on earth, and I love a good bit of exciting weather :p

I think I just need someone to slap me and make me accept the offer.

Thanks for that. Although it hasn't made the decision any easier lol. Sheffield is 69th in the world. Oklahoma is classified as 401-450th... erm...

Hmm
