Anyone modded a PSU?

i have swapped out the fan on my psu, it is straight foward and easy to do. the only issues you may encounter are
1.the fan maybe soildered in
2.the new fan may not provide enough airflow to cool the psu
and finally like you said you will need to check that is indeed an 80mm fan in the psu

It's defo an 80mm fan, im guessing it will provide enough cooling as its a noctua? It is soldered in but that's not a problem, I can solder the new one in.

thats the thing, noctua are silent fans so they move little air compared to a louder fan such as the stock one

Antone know the specs of the stock fan so I can compare them?

EDIT: Googled around and fount the Noctua has 31.2CFM and the stock cooler has 22-55CFM? Would this be enough?

Hard to say. If the rest of your case is very cool then probably, if it's running at 60 degrees already then no.

I looked into doing this and discovered that I couldn't find a higher quality fan than what the supply came with, so I remounted it using the akasa soft mount pins and put the case back on. It does vibrate less now.

Your supply should spin the fan up when it gets hotter, so a lower power fan should just be run at higher rpm than the stock one. So yeah, I think you'll be fine. Set it up with the new fan, then install it and use it for a while, periodically put your hand over the psu exhaust. If you feel a gentle breeze of very hot air, turn the computer off and go back to the stock fan. Use a thermometer of some sort if you have one, otherwise your hand and subjective readings will probably do.

Cheers

PSU fans are thermally controlled. The hotter it gets the faster the fans will spin. This depends on 2 most important factors Load of the PSU and how hot the air the PSU is sucking inside it.The simple way to have a quite and cool running PSU is to get an already quite PSU and a case that allows the PSU to draw cool air from the outside usually bottom mounted cases.

My Akasa PSU cost me only £39.99 brand new its a 550watt PowerPax model with a 120mm fan. Its absolutely silent and been spot on since the day i first plugged it in. RRP £79+.
