Anyone moved to eGPU?

The gigabyte auros box is now available in the uk, Just ordered mine from another retailer that has it on pre order. With the current price of gpu's it's a bargain compared to other egpu empty boxes.

Will likely use the 1070 in my main rig and drop my itx 1060 in it to pair with my xps 13 for on the go gaming.

previously had an Alienware amp but sold it as it was too big and noisy, also the proprietary connector limited its use.

it wont work correctly with the Dell XPS lineup.

Dell only passes 20gbps (half speed) over its TB3 in these models. While you can hack it to work as i managed too with the Razer Core performance is not great.

This is the main difference between the razer laptops and the others. Hopefully more will have a full speed TB3 port in the future.

update on the Aorus gaming box with my xps 13.

Firestrike

(1168) stock xps 13 (ignore 1070 it was running on internal GPU)

(7935) egpu internal screen

(8589) egpu external monitor

I have to say i'm impressed with both the quality and the performance (even at 20gbps).

This thing is tiny, and the fact that i'm even writing a post that my dell ultra book is now a semi capable gaming laptop is ridiculous.

Its expensive, but then factor in the current prices on the 1070's and it's not too bad, yes its not desktop performance but if you want that then buy a desktop? :)

The carry case is really good quality and makes it easily transportable, its a new niche area egpu's but so far this is the best i've seen.

planning on trying to see if i can drop a 1060 into it and what performance that gives compared to the above, and a friend has an asus rog 1060 laptop, so will hook it up to that and see how it performs over the internal.

Nice to hear your getting the performance bump :)

Did you have to run any hacks at all ? As mentioned above interesting to see numbers with full TB3 speed

Get some pics up! Only images I can find are naff previews

no hacks at all, very nearly plug and play, I only needed to update the nvidia global profile to external gpu as default and then it kicked in for everything.

I'll put some pics up when i get chance, I might see if i can do a mini review and start a new tread.

I'm not sure who this product is marketed at, for me 12months ago a gtx 960m was the average mobile gpu and performance was pretty poor, now the GTX 1050+ are doing a decent job at all price ranges on the laptop market, so unless at 40gbps it outperforms the 1060 it really is a niche for sub 14 inch ultrabook owners.

Was no where near that easy with the razer core. Do gigabyte provide software for this unit?

Razer make you download their own software installer through which you get the core software. Was far from plug and play on my XPS13 or 15

I believe Gigabyte saw a gap.in the market and took it. Asus box is larger but can only use Asus cards ... Not to sure with Gigabytes ones but I think you can in theory use mini cards like Zotac for future Nvidia products etc etc
Plus when companies are charging £300 just for the enclosure...ouch

It's really aimed at people who may have say workstation/business laptops they used on the move with basic GPU for battery life (ie 6700HQ/7700HQ or similar), and then turn into a more all rounded gaming/workstation machine when docked at home or in the office.

If you need a combination of power and flexibility, I can certainly see the point. Much cheaper to buy this than a whole extra machine or laptop, especially with current pricing.

No need for any extra software, just plugged in, it detected there was a new device, installed the latest nvidia drivers, updated the global profile and it works.

I have since installed the optional gigabyte software utility though as it allows me to change the colour of the LED's :D
