Hi,

I am wondering if we have any members here (i seem to recall Fuzz was going through the connection process) using Gigaclear?

I am viewing a property this week which is near exclusively supplied by them, options are 1mbit ADSL2+, or 1gbit FTTP via gigaclear. This sounds and seems to be an amazing option, but do we have any real world users on here who can comment?

I hear some negatives through google reviews regarding maintenance outages. I was thinking that if these are regular, but short in duration, i could live with that or more likely go for a very cheap 1mbit ADSL connection as a backup connection to keep us connected through any such windows.

Replies much appreciated :)

I've read mainly positive things about Gigaclear. Either way mate, with your options being 1Mbps ADSL or symmetrical 1Gbps... #justsaying. You could always use 4G as failover, if you really needed to. I can't see them being that unreliable however!

Gigaclear and Hyperoptic are up there at the top in my opinion - they don't seem as amateur as the likes of B4rn. I'd say you'd be happy with them.

Thanks for the replies, indeed they do seem a professional outfit and they are expanding rapidly even winning public money to do so. I note also that they have opened their network up as a wholesale entity and there are a few other ISPs available now.

Rainmaker; There is no cell coverage at the house (unfortunately I am very used to that, I’ve not lived in a cell covered area for years!) hence the thought of a cheap slow adsl backup connection. It would at least keep the suresignals/WiFi calling working for voice :)

Hi,

Long-time lurker, first time poster.

Two years ago, I moved to a new property in West Berkshire which was served only by ADSL2+; my line is quite long and could only manage about 5Mbit on a good day. About a month ago Gigaclear came to our street and I jumped at the chance to sack BT off and switch to their fibre network.

I subscribe to the Home 200 product (200Mbit symmetrical). Speeds are consistent, ping times are very low and the service is rock solid. I have had no down time at all. I'm sure there will be times when the service fails me eventually, but since my ADSL line would die in bad weather/good weather/bank holidays/work days etc etc I don't think I'm too worried about it!

They are very professional, no complaints there. The support team are all based in the UK and there doesn't seem to be any kind of ticketing system! I have only contacted support a couple of times and every time I have been in direct contact with L2 tech, they are very friendly and happy for you to email them directly if you need to.

The few things I would point out:
- Wi-Fi on the supplied router is absolutely horrible! I installed a Ubiquiti AP to solve that problem;
- On the home products, there is no option for bridge mode, it's only available on the business products and incurs an additional monthly charge. I have not really got any reasonable explanation for this;
- No IPv6, yet.

Fantastic reply, thank you for taking the time to do so. :)

You sound very positive so that is encouraging.

Re the WiFi, i’d switch it off anyway to be honest. I will be moving my existing Cisco APs there so id be covered by that :) I don’t really mind if the supplied router is required and cannot bridge but thank you for mentioning it, i assume it’ll handle the throughout ok though? it’d be trunked to a couple of Cisco 3850s anyway which handle the APs and wired lan, so all it’d need to do is act as a gateway.

At least the internet provison sounds good, I need to review the rest of the property now :p

The supplied router can definitely handle 1Gbps just fine, so no concerns there; just the rubbish Wi-Fi which as you know, is easily fixed using your own AP's.

Now if only buying a house was as easy as sorting out Internet connectivity! Good luck with the house hunting.

Ha, thanks. Yep early days on it, but this is a check i had to make as the alternatives are not really acceptable even if we like the property.
No wonder you need to live miles away from any other houses when you have a pair of 3850s running all day
haha :)

So, spanner in the works. I have spoken with Gigaclear as i could not see any fibre works in the lane outside the property despite their system allowing an order to take place for the address. They have been extremely helpful but have advised of excess construction charges which could reach in the region of £15k. The property requires a 1100m dig and additional cabinet.

Im waiting on a more detailed estimate from them, but this isnt good news :(

I'd already be squeezing the price as much as possible though, so regardless of the agreed price this comes on top :(

15k is a lot, but if the house is perfect and it's just the internet that isn't then is it a lot in the grand scheme? Definitely one to think about.

The house is very far from perfect, but it is my only real shot at getting a decent lot of land for my budget. A house can be extensively changed and extended though, you can never change a plot :)

Indeed, i am not writing it off. There is a wealthy looking neighbour (large house, nice cars and horses etc) who i would have thought might be interested. Once i have a more detailed estimate on paper, i will approach them.
