Never overclocked anything before so im wondering where to start. Looking to clock xeon 5660 on Asus Sabertooth X58 motherboard with 6gb of Patriot memory. The Asus motherboard came with some Intel Extreme tuning utility which i thought would work to overclock it. there is an Autotune option but its says "your platform either does not support watchdog timer coverage or it is disable in the bios" I dont see that option in the bios so im not sure what the issue is. Is their better OC software available i could try?

Thanks

Overclock in the bios to your target GHZ and fine tune with software

couldnt see the options in the bios, but asus board came with software on a dvd with Intel Extreme Tuning Utility. Manual tuning option allows you to bump the Host clock frequency. I started off at 133mhz, incrementing 10mhz at a time and ran cpu stress tests for 5 mins to see what the temperatures went up to.

Currently at 163 mhz for host clock frequency. CPU speed went from 2.79GHz to
3.42GHZ. Temps went up slightly from about 41c to 53c. The max temp for this Xeon cpu is 72c i think.

I wonder how much more i could squeeze out of it?

i have a xeon in my rig

they clock just the same as any 1366 cpu in their class

for example, a wesmere will clock just the same as an i7 gulftown the only difference being is that it has dual QPI links.

your cpu also has dual qpi links but that becomes irrelavent on the board you are using.

the max multi of your cpu is 21 but that wont matter too much as i have had silly BCLK out of the sabertooth board. it does however entirely depend on how well that board suits xeons.
i am willing to bet that it the 5660 isnt a supported cpu and as such will throw curveballs at you.
my xeon on my UD7 clocks well but has a lot of niggles compared to the likes of the 980X which the board is designed to run with.

you have a very nice xeon. it is a 6core 12thread 1366 cpu but with the advantage of being a 95wTDP
this is 35w less than a standard westmere cpu
this would do well in an SR2 with another matching cpu to be friends with.

should be very good for overclocking, probably more so than my westmere cpu

having said that, if you own a $1200+ cpu and need to ask how to clock it, it is a little worrying.

My friend gave me the cpu so i just built a cheap system around that. my old dual core system died a horrible death on me a couple of weeks back. No way i would spend that much money on a cpu alone!

I am just more interested in how to overclock etc, not really looking to squeeze every last MHz out of it! I do need to get a better graphics card though as i got a cheap 30 quid DDR3 card, just to get some onboard output.

Whats the best stress test software to use for Win7 x64 systems to ensure i set a reliable overclocking speed. Also what would be a good long term cpu temperature be?

Thanks

Dan

a friend gave you a $1200 cpu?

will he be friends with me too?

seriously though, 200X20 with 1.3v and 1.65 on the memory

set the memory to its rated speeds

leave everything else on auto

overclocking it should be a doddle

use intel burn test
set the thread count to 12
set the test to run 500 times

use realtemp open the GT version in the folder] to monitor temps
CPUz for your readouts.

done.

Heh! well he did break my last machine, he dropped it down the stairs while helping me move house last month. he has his own IT server repair company so he gave me a few parts to make up for it!

I'll try the above mentioned above tonight and see how it works! All those settings i can change in the Intel utility or should i makes these changes in the bios?
