Ive just won this on ebay for £84, when you turn it on it has these 3 lines on the screen, that im not sure if there ment to be there or not. Have I just bought a faulty laptop that cant be fixed?

I should get it sometime next week

Another question, why do laptops share the memory with the graphics card? cos it has 512mb of mem but 128mb goes to the graphics card, so it has only 384mb of mem really... Why?

the screen looks fine cos if you look at the bottom near the lines, it displays a few numbers, and they display fine. So Im hoping thats its a loose connection somewhere or the graphics card needs reseating.

got the laptop today, and you are right the screen is buggered, cos if you press hard on the screen the lines disapear

But I have a bigger prob, the keybord dosent work and theres no ps2 socket to try a keyboard, but ive tried my usb g15 keyboard but nothing.

Ive looked on ebay for a replacement keyboard, but cant find one with the same model number, ect. But ive found 1 that looks the same as the 1 thats in it.

What do you think guys, should I just stick it back on ebay and try to get my money back,, cos at the end of the day, to totally fix it, it will cos at least anothe £70-80, plus it looks like someone has had ago of fixing it before me. I think it would be a cracking quite nippy laptop. But am I going to be putting too much money in to it, for what it is??

No. Last year i bought a faulty p3 500mhz laptop for £50 that had a faulty hdd, and I fixed that for about £15, and I thought I may of got myself a bargin here too,, but it didnt work out the same way:mad::mad:

It doesn't have a graphics card. It's an nvidia intigrated graphics chip that uses shared memory which is why 128mb of your 512 goes to it. You CAN'T reseat it.

I know this because I work at the place that it originally came from and who are the people who own the company advent :p (purple shirts.... ><)

Its a ATI express 200M 128mb card in the laptop.

regarding the keyboard, its possibly the controller thats buggered, which means a new mainboard as well as lcd, and a new keyboard wont fix it.
what you need to do is using a small flat bladed jewelers screwdriver is push back the very small plastic tabs that hold the keyboard in place i think there's four along the top edge of the keyboard, as you push them back lift the keyboard up, i would leave it connected as the connectors can break easily, just flip it over, then with small phillips remove the 3 small screws and 1 large one holding in the silver ram cover, now this should reveal four small dipswitches, with the power off and battery out, push these up using flat screwdriver, now press the on button several times, take out the mains lead and push them down again, this will reset your bios defaults, plug it all back in and switch on, if you can press f2 to continue its ok, if not you need a mainboard

Ummm I kind of bust the keyboard ribbon now, cos I noticed there was a scratch running though 1 of the wires on the ribbon near where you connect it into the connector onto the laptop. So I cut off the bit where the scratch was and tried it again but still no joy, but I guess it wouldnt work now cos no wires on the ribbon are bare. But before I cut it, there was deff power going through the keyboard cos the underside gave that tinggly feeling when you touched it.

The connector on the laptop where the keyboard ribbon pushes into look a bit battered up either side of the connector where you pull apart the plastic things. Someone has been there before me. but to be honnes theres no need to pull apart the catches on the connector, cos you can get the ribbon out and in without doing that,

How do you know how to take a advent apart? You got everything right accept theres 3 big black scews in the other plate where the switches are, but I havent been under there, cos like i say ive buggered the keyboard ribbon up now

I managed to pick up a used and partially faulty Pentium-M laptop for £90, fix it up and sell it on for double the price.

I got this for £84, and if I can get it fully working it will be woth about £250, cos a Sempron 2800+ 1.6ghz, 512mb of mem (upgradeable to 2gb) is still quite fast in laptops isnt it guys?

I made my mind up earlier about sticking it back on ebay, but whan I had put it all back together and cleaned it up for the pics, i was having 2nd thoughts, cos it looks dam nice all cleaned up. Im really temped to waste a bit more of my money and buy a keyboard, with 50 50 chance it will work, then if it works change the screen after xmas, then keep it for myself or sell it.

Am I being stupid, should i just stick it back on ebay and try to get back what I paid for it?

I was thinking about trying the keyboard from my p3 500mhz laptop, if its the same ribbon connection, should it work? cos all the keys look the same, and theres no extra ones or missing. Good move or not?

Someone says if I change the inverter for the screen, that might get rid of the lines. But I cant see how that will fix the lines on the screen, if the lines disapear when you put presure on the screen?

the inverter powers the backlight its independant of the data signal, the flat ribbon cables that carry the signal are damaged, which is why some part of the screen is ok, you could open the screen and try padding the area on the cable which would simulate constant pressure but its not gonna be a reliable fix,

You need to put a massive amount of pressure on to the screen to get rid of the lines, unless its the ribbon, and the lines disapear when preasure is added to the ribbon by pressing the screen on the ribbon, I dont know.

I have a £20 replacement keyboard comming and if it does the job (50 50% chance it will), then I will look into the screen. If the keyboard still wont work, its back on ebay with the darn thing.

yeh, thats why im not spending anymore time on the laptop if the keyboard still dont work, cos altogether so far with buying it and the keyboard its costed me £127, and I hope to get my £104 back that I bought it for if the replacement keyboard still dont work.

But yeh I will clear the bios as you say, but I think its clear anyway cos it says:

CMOS Settings Wrong
CMOS Date/Time Not Set
Press F1 to run SETUP
press F2 to load default values and continue

I would be surpised if its the keyboard controller thats buggered cos its only like 2years old if that, and theres no cracks on it or anything to make me think its been dropped.:confused:

Im not very confident about being able to fix it, basically its 50 50 if this new keyboard will work

If it dont work, I will stick it back on ebay and try to get my money back, then I will buy a new acer gemstone lappy.

Ive just tried the laptop again, and its got another line now, havent got the keyboard yet tho, I hope it will come tomorrow.

I guess the reason its got another line is cos ive been messing about with it. Beermonster could it be a loose connection by any chance, cos like I said if I put pressure and bend the screen the lines disappear?

Ive taken the screen apart, do you mean the data cable that plugs into the lcd is damaged?, and yeah there wernt any loose connections,, but now the backlight isnt working now!!!!!!!What have I done to the backlight????. Beermonster could I chat to you on msn please???
