"cloudy" does - he built it from scratch in his single garage with no electricity - he had to run a long extension lead out from the house every time he wanted to do anything!

Project log here on Locost Builders.

He's now working on a "production" model... :)

I was under the impression that bike engines are cars aren't a great mixture - surely the lack of torque and having to rev to 12k+ to do anything gets old quickly?

Depends on the weight really i'd say, if it's attached to an extremely light body and can zip through the ratios I can see the appeal.

Plus, who doesn't want a 13k redline and a sequential box!

Its swings and roundabouts though. I've always wanted a kit car, but decided that if I did I would get one with a car engine. The stresses applied to, and therefore the work needed to keep them running sweet, is less on a car engine pulling something lighter than it was designed for compared to a bike engine pulling something heavier than it was designed for.

MK Indys seem to be a popular choice at the cheaper end of the market for BEC's. R1 or Fireblade engines seem quite common.

Yeah I have a Megabusa, built it myself and on the road in 2009.

Its done 6000 miles since the build. Love it to bits

Busa's need dry sumps so factor that in to costs, pretty much everything else apart from Blackbird engines don't.

R1 engines seem best bang for buck at the moment

If you have any questions ask away

this is what they do best.

for the money you wont get quicker on track.
mines a R1 sylva striker.

used to do 2/3K road miles a year in it but now its mainly for trackdays with a few hundred road miles a year.

pic is pre R1 with a fireblade engine, as can be seen in the vid the bonnet needed butchering for the R1 motor

Whats the maintenance like on a BEC? Do you have to keep the engine regularly serviced as it hauling around a car much heavier than the bike it was designed for?

road and occasional track use no different to any other car. gears are an issue on the early blades which was partly why i changed to R1.

i only got 7 trackdays last year out of my R1 engine before it spun a bearing but most seem to have no problems with them.
it was my own fault as i was using crap oil and had got the oil to hot (dont ignore warning lights no matter how much fun your having) causing a bit of surge through one corner.
now fitting an accusump and using an ester based synthetic.
