As title really, has anyone had the pleasure?

I can't stretch to the new one (Circa £51k), and i'm not into the Avant just the std A4 shape. I've seen a few 3-5 years old in the 18-24k brackett. I haven't fully done my research yet so not sure if the older ones are as good as the new ones (read a few reviews all good). Generall consenus seems to be that they're better than the M-Tec BM's but I'm not too keen on BM's. Insurance is a bit of a stinker at Grp 20 he he he

Any comments welcome!

This is only the general concencous on Audi owners forums. The current RS4 is the first time they've got it properly right in virtually every way rather than just being super-fast Audi's.

Still think they are damn cool though :D

I wouldnt say that its only on the Audi forums. Everywhere i have seen, the RS4 it has been regarded as one of the top cars to drive.

I always thought the old RS4 was Avant only, or do you mean the S4?

Didn't say it wasn't, just that the M3 was regarded as a more involving and rewarding drive.

:) National search on autotrader for RS4 only shows up new models.

Search for RS4 Avant and all the older ones pop up.

My dad's view:

Nowhere near as good as the RS2 (cheaper, faster, better) or the RS6 ("Just a more quality car...")

Ah I need to step up that research!!

Spose the Avant isn't to harder pill to swallow!! lol

its a beast of a car, how many estates are there that can genuinely "smoke" an m3/scooby/evo? (opinion based on the one i drove that had an exhaust and a remap :p)

2.7 bi turbo = agressive monster
4.2 v8 = not quite as aggressive monster!

I thought the 2.7 was the pap one?

dont know much about them but theres a guy down my street who has one and its absolutely stunning! by far (apart from the ex-rally lancia delta across the road!) the best looking "sensible" car ive ever seen

not sure on ownership, i was just driving one for a day and i couldnt stop grinning! fast as you like, soon as the turbo's kick in its like all hell has broken loose.

I think the current RS4 is the only car that has most of the elements right to make it a great car, you can keep the rest of the RS models as far as I am concerned. All RS models are fast in a straight line it is when they get to the twisty bits that they often fall apart. If you want a car to fly down autobahns they are very good but if you want a car to do that and then go cross country for the last 20 miles they are left wanting.

The previous RS4 was very quick and to many people who frequent the web 0-60 and 1/4 miles times seem to be the key metric, but if you like to drive a car and enjoy the odd track day none of them are as pure as an E46 M3, even the current one. Having said all that they are all lovely to be in and own but they would not be my choice for a performance saloon, and I speak as someone who has had 2 A4's in the past.

the old one was estate only, the only saloon rs was the rs6, and i dont think the rs4 was ever really considered a track car was it ? :p

The previous model RS4 was Avant only you are correct. The RS6 and current RS4 come in both flavours, the RS4 also comes with a soft top. The RS models are sold to compete with the M's so being good around bends is vital, even on the road. The new RS4 seems to be the first RS where Audi have realised this and even if they never go near a track many of the people who buy them new will compare them to the equivalent M model and bar the current RS4 they are left wanting. When the E92 M3 arrives I suggest they will be left wanting once more.

The RS4 left me uninspired and even though it was fast, beautifully built, sounded like a Nascar with sport button pressed and went like stink it was missing a certain something. Great car, just did not hit the spot which was surprising as I fully expected to buy one before I drove it based on what I had read. I left the Audi dealers in my M3 of the time and really felt the M3 was a nicer car to drive, even with its under geared and vague steering. Sure the RS4 was quicker, a nicer place to be, but it’s chassis dynamics where the M3 betters the RS4 in my book and to me the balance and feel of a chassis is what makes a performance car not just a big engine and numbers on a page.

Each to their own, we are talking about very good cars and minor differences really.

i remember the new convertible at the allstarcup last year, some young kid sat in it and it started rolling forward the poor kid was horrified when it started rolling towards the steel fence! :D

lol i'm going up from a Focus!!! Might have a look at the M3 also then, the thing that slightly puts me off is that M3's seem a bit more common, I know that's a silly thing to say in that they must be a good car if ownership is high but I'd really like something that isn't seen too much, bit of a silly thing I know

There was a video on metacafe with the new rs4 vs m3, the rs4 beat it 7/7 (something like that) on a straight run and the rs4 also beat the m3 on a lap run.

Obviously, the m3 slided round the corner much better than the rs4 did.

Theres two:

http://www.metacafe.com/watch/122116/2007_audi_rs4/ - long one

http://www.metacafe.com/watch/117413/rs4_vs_m3/ - short one

For the price of the rs4 you get everything you want with it, truely is value for money and it holds its value much better than m3 and m5.
Audi have this new magnetic thingy which is suppose to be better and improved handling for the quattro, to compete with BMWs rwd power maybe?

I like how BMW have copied audis tiptronic system for faster gear changes, and pedal shifts! Apparently they had this long ago? I just seen these features on the new 3 series.
