I was thinking recently, I carry around so many expensive devices if I were to be mugged I'd be out close to a grand.

I've always avoided Phones4U/CPW style mobile insurance as it always seemed overpriced.

Does anyone have gadget insurance? How much do you pay? I've had a quick look around but would be interested in people's experiences.

Does it cover items outside the home?

Covers theft outside the home on phone and laptop as well :)

Is that 3 grand for for everything or just the phone, laptop, pc and other gadgets?

Everything. I don't own much technology yet. When I get my full studio sorted it will be worth more, but I can up it at that point. Something that RBS are actually good for!

I frequently read the T&Cs of policies in the hope that I find something worthwhile. I've yet to find anything. :/

It seems any kind of insurance like this can be used by people "I left it on a train oops can I have a new one" so much that the premiums/excess and T&Cs aren't good.

It's only a stonking deal if you lose or trash stuff surely, otherwise you are paying £150 a year for nothing.

I'd rather have it protected than not. In the last 3 years I've had 3 phones, several sets of expensive headphones, and a netbook stolen. I also live in Eltham. Which means it's probably a good idea to get cover :)

For normal peeps with a brain and sense It's a complete waste.

With all these insurances adding up it will cost you more in the long run, unless your someone very special and skilled at losing/breaking personal belongings.

That's the only insurance I have. As I said, I'd much rather it was covered, as if my stuff gets damaged in a fire/stolen/dies out of warranty I doubt I'd have the money to be able to replace the things I need...

I live in London and commute on a combination of tubes and buses. I consider myself savvy enough not to forget my bag and to watch out for people trying to put their hands in my bag but given the value of the items most of us carry around these days I am wondering!

I have had on one occasion someone trying to undo the zip on my bag while I've been walking down a platform. The brazen cheek. Dude bolted when I turned around.

This. London can be a very unsavoury place sometimes.

Most times it's by far the most amazing place I've lived. There really is so much opportunity.

I'm reading the T&Cs Shayper.
The bits below are for laptop insurance.

You're not covered for theft "from anywhere other than Your Home or Permanent Home Address unless involving forcible and violent entry or exit"

Also not covered for theft - "any fax machines, photographic equipment or hi-fi equipment which can be used in conjunction with Laptop Computer Equipment or any other equipment or computer accessories;"

There's lots of little exclusions like these with policies which erode what you actually end up covered for, meaning that you can be covered for a lot less than you think you are... and more importantly most times you might claim you'd be refused.
