Anyone picked up a Sony 40W2000 recently?

Looking to pick one of these up soon, anyone got one recently?

Any other similar spec'd 40"+ screens in the same price range? £1500 or lower.

Main use will be Xbox360+Inbuilt Freeview, then adding SkyHD in March time.

Hi mate

I've got the 40V2000 as I was too impatient to wait. It's a cracking screen for the money and I'm very pleased with mine. From the demos I'd seen at the time I felt the V series was the best, so I can only imagine what W series is like with full 1080p support.

I have just got a 40" x2000. It is truly amazing! Got Sky HD paired up and revenge of the sith is truly mind blowing, the detail is incredible.

Just working out when to go for a HD DVD, they only output at 1080i at the moment which is a pain.

Friends of our got one just before christmas and whilst it's a cracking screen I was hugely disappointed witht he quality of SD sources on it. Other friends with the Tosh 47" feel the same way about their set.

Standard Sky + and freeview look appauling compared to our 36" Panny CRT. Now I know they have Sky HD on order but given the lack of content for the few Sky HD channels I can't help but wonder if we've all been sucked into wanting these screens where in fact for the vast majority of TV viewing a plasma or CRT gives a noticably better experience.

Granted if you are only watching Sky HD channels, HD DVD or XBox 360 then a HD LCD screen wil be better but for day to day TV.... I wonder...

I've certainly decided to hang on until there aremore HD-Sources available

are there any demos/vids of the set running? i know you won't get any sense of visual quality but i'd like to see how cool the set looks sitting running generally if that makes sense.

The 40W2000 is superb as a PC monitor. 1920x1080 over HDMI looks superb from all accounts (1:1 mapped). The 40W2000 will also take 1920x1080 1:1 over VGA with a bit of work (also handy for 1080p Xbox360 over VGA)

The only thing that worries me at the moment is the quality control problems with the backlights. There have been a fair few cases on the avforums of people having very uneven backlight leakage. The kind of problem that ruins any dark scenes.

For £1500 I want a perfect screen, and the risk of a dodgy backlight is a bit worrying. I was thinking of stretching to the 40X2000 instead. The new 40X2500 will be out in a month or two, so prices on the X series should keep dropping.

I have the S model doing 1-1 pixel mapping via VGA. As far as I am aware the V,W and X will do the same.

W and X only officially do 1360x768 over VGA, hence not 1:1 if fullscreen.

However, as mentioned above, people have managed to get 1920x1080 1:1 over VGA on the W-series. Just requires a bit of work with Powerstrip. It works straight off with the Xbox 360 VGA 1080p though, something to do with Xbox360 using sync-on-green I think.

Thanks. Hoping this is the case. My current 50" screen is great for my 3.5m viewing distance. So a bit worried about dropping to a 40" screen unless it's perfect via DVI-HDMI for PC use.

you wont get overscan on HDMI with a 1080 P panel. as the panel has the same number of pixels as the signal it accepts - 1920 x 1080 for both the panel resolution, and the resolution of 1080P

wheras the V series has 1366 x 768 resolution, but will be input a 720p signal of 1280x720

My S series is running 1360 x 768 from a mac mini 1 to 1 pixel mapping. There are 3 pixels at each end not being used but you would not know unless I told you.

the W series are getting a lot of negative feedback over at AVforums atm.

It was the AVforums that convinced me to go for it.

The main issue seems to be the backlight, and yet many have said it actually improves with time and that not many people are waiting, just returning before giving it chance to settle in.

Will report back ASAP tho.

I just ordered the 40W this morning along with the Sony 860 DVD recorder, can't wait to get them both :cool:
