I'm looking to get my dad BF3 for Xmas but his pc is abit dump.

Its a shame because he LOVES BF2 so this could have been perfect.

He's not bothered about what it looks like too much so settings will be low and he will be playing at a max of 1440x900

Dads PC specs :

e6550 @ 2.33ghz (whatever stock speed the 6550 is)
Geforce 8800 GTS 512
4gb ram

Anyone with a similar spec PC play it?

Thanks :)

Before upgrading graphics I played with:

Q6600
Radeon HD 4870 512
4gb ram

And I was using low settings in multiplayer just in order for it to be playable. I think I was getting about 30 fps average.

I then put a 6870 into the same pc and its perfect now on high settings. So perhaps just a gpu upgrade is in order?

My mate reckons he gets decent fps on medium, he has the same spec but a 4870 1GB.

But you say you're using 1440x900, I was using 1920x1080 so probably the lack of vram was very apparent.

e6300 @ 3Ghz
8800 GTS 512 @ 750Mhz
4gb RAM

BF3 ranges from disgusting to playable on low (like, 20fps - 50fps), I noticed very little performance difference between 1440 x 900 vs 1680 x 1050. People have been telling me BF3 is heavy on the GPU mostly, but in our case I think the crippling factor is the CPU. It was always stressed to 100% during gameplay, I'm not sure how 2.3Ghz would cope. Even with this relic of a PC I've put in some good BF3 hours though.

Not sure what else to suggest though, modern FPS games haven't really captured my imagination.

try and bump that CPU to 3GHZ then upgrade the graphics card. SUre you cant expect to be rocking around in all ultra settings but should be playable low-med so the game is at least enjoyable!
