I'm looking for some noob tips to competitive TF2. I've read the 'Beginners Guide' (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=792794), and whilst it's good, there's still a tonne of terminology I hear thrown around in the TF2 lobby that I don't know anything about.

Also if anyone knows where to get some really low level, basic games i'd be happy to hear them. Playing in TF2 lobby is ok, except for the fact i'm mostly getting games with other players who have played 500+ games, whereas i've played 5, and then get moaned at when I don't quite get to mid as quickly as everyone else.

just get boozed up and play drunk, that way if anyone moans at you tell them to do one in a drunken rage. ?

my advice is to play the pl (payload) maps

for a newbie they are easier to figure out what is going on i.e. find the tracks then either move the train or stop the other team moving it

pl_badwater is a good map to start on

It's an awesome map too, I still play it almost daily

I don't play 'competitive' TF2, but I rock at the game :D

I'm fine with pubbing it up. Clocked an absurd amount of hours now and want to play some actual matches instead of just beating up on the same old regs.

The best way to learn really is to just join a clan be it a casual one who sometimes plays competitive games (in my experience these always fall apart quite quickly proper competition wise) or a more serious one (ie more focused on leagues and competitions). A less serious clan maybe suitable for you as these typically have lower skilled people in. Either should do you fine for learning the basics for competitive play though. Just visit lots of different public servers run by clans and get chatting to them. Simples :D

Also last time I played competitive TF2 (many years ago!) payload maps weren't really played but that may have changed now.

I play competitively. My team is pretty decent, looking to enter division 4 next season of ETF2L. You're welcome to join our mumble server and play a few games. It's been a bit quiet recently, with ETF2L season 9 just ending so a lot of us are taking a break from TF2, but we're not the only team who uses the mumble so we're always mixing and such with others.

What class are you looking to play as your main?

I play tf2 at a decent level but i am more of a highlander player. Lobby is a bit meh, it can be great at times but you always get 1 or 2 players who moan and spoil the game.

Highlander (9v9) is the best place to start. 9v9 is a good way to learn the basics of competive play. 6v6 or 7v7 is a bit more hardcore and u have to be bit of a specialist in your chosen class or you will soon get found out.

If you want to play solly or demo there are plenty of trick and jump maps to learn that side of the game. The best sollys and demos spend ages prefecting there rollouts (getting to middle of maps fast as possible). Theres no real easy way to get into competive play you jsut have to pay your dues and practice :P

Another good place to look is here http://www.own3d.tv/tf2tv is a really good way to learn by watching the best in action.

www.gtfogaming.co.uk these are the servers i play on, a lot of the regulars enter leagues and tournys they also do a lot of 6v6 lobbys. I was part of the gtfo blue team that won the highlander ukcs community cup it was a lot of fun.
