Hi,

Just wondering how many of you use skype instead of your normal BT landline,

thinking of using it, the calls are cheap and the Skype in thing looks perfectly acceptable (30 euros for a year! not bad IMO).

Cheers

David

Firstly...can I just say to Haggisman - fair play! I was lucky enough to be in Sweden for a week at the start of the summer holidays and even the fat ugly chicks are gorgeous! So good job for scoring a Swede!

Back to Skype, my grandmother uses it all the time. She txts me from it and calls people, including her friend in New Zealand for cheap.

I only use it PC > PC when playing games etc.

I use it as my business line, 0845 number connected to my skype number then piped through to my mobile when im not at home, works a treat and saves having to get a second line to the house just for business.

Lots of people use Skype, but I doubt many use it as a replacement for a landline phone service.

Skype use a proprietary protocol for their services, which makes the amount of equipment usable with it limited. Other VoIP providers use standard protocols (compatible with all manner of equipment), offer cheaper calls and many give you an incoming phone number (the equivalent of "Skype In") for free.

I use it to speak to my sister in the USA for free. Since I only have a mobile this used to cost her a small fortune. Otherwise with my friends I use my phone instead or MSN..

I don't use the phone much... but if I wanted to call someone overseas I'd ring their computer using one of the many pieces of free software.

Can't see it's worth paying anything for this.

I use it as a replacement for a landline, though its not BT that its replacing, its the evil conglomerate that runs everything in austria its replacing, even though I am forced to use their cable to watch tv and connect to the interwebs, oh the hipocrisy

one of my mates got it, said it was brilliant and said I shoujld deffinatly get it. I got it, used it to speak to him once, never used it since, waste of time and space, I have a perfectly good mobile phone if i want to call, and I usually talk on msn anyway.

This thread is discussing the use of Skype in connection with the PSTN, so all the people you are calling or who are calling you need is a conventional phone

why would you want to, by nature a circuit switched network is much more desirable for realtime communication then packet switched, and BT are hardly very expensive, many packages offering free calls, and you will pay line rental for your internet connection anyway. I can only see it being useful for international calls, and seeing that I don't know any people abroad, it has no use for me.

Is that an 0845 number provided by Skype or BT etc?

I use Skype all the time, its perfect for when I'm online gaming with my mates and we can talk and have a laugh at the same time :D

Especially when you kill then :p

/edit, I dont pay for calls, only PC to PC

Our work has pretty much banned Skype due to bandwidth issues (IIRC). Any academics wanting to use VOIP have to use Gizmo instead. Of course, this causes a lot of problems with other academics in places like CERN.
