Anyone recommend a decent external 3.5" external drive?...

I'm not sure what to go for...

Was thinking of the Maxtor Basics Personal Storage 3200 300GB.

Is there any point going for a better one with 16mb cache etc?... I'm just after space really.

Surely you have a bottleneck with the USB2.0 controller's maximum throughput?...

Don't worry about performance drives for external storage. Just buy the one that gets you the most storage per £.
