anyone recovered a vista password without a reinstall ?

hi,

friend has a problem whereby they have reset their system to "factory default", they have then put in a new password for the account they have on it, but when they type it in the system says its wrong.

tried upper/lower case etc without any luck.

having had a look about the reset password option requires you to have made a "backup" of the password, so that isn't an option.

it also seems that vista doesnt have an active "default" admin profile so cant sign on as that either.

anyone managed to resolve this sort of problem without a restore ?
