Hi, after your help.

I was going to put this in the TV and music section but it's kind of an interesting topic on its own so thought GD might be interested. There used to be a TV show on C4 (possibly late Friday night) where groups of holiday makers from different countries were staying in a hotel / resort. They were asked to do tasks or sometimes they were put in situations to see how they would react culturally.

Basically the different reactions / approaches of the different countries were analysed.

I remember one scenario clearly when the groups separately came down to breakfast. In the breakfast room were flags of the nations of the world and for this experiment each group would find that their own countries flag has been vandalised or burnt overnight.

Americans - Very upset I think some of the women close to tears
Japanese - Very shocked and concerned they had upset someone
Brits - A mixture of American and Japanese reaction.

There were Scandinavians and Germans too but I cant remember their reactions as much.

The whole thing wasn't very scientific but it was fascinating and the stereotypes really shone through in most tasks.

Does anyone know what it was called? Would be interesting to find some clips on YouTube.

I think its on youtube as well. I remember it too. It was a very good series and proved that stereotypical opinions of countries tended to be right. Though I guess in this day and age people don't want that kinda news.

Yes I think it would be seen as controversial to depict this kind of thing now. Everyone must be viewed as an individual these days and to characterise groups in this way would be seen as regressive. This is in spite of thousands of books and papers over the years exploring the very real notion of culture. The nature and nurture argument fascinates me. Could only the Japanese have created Japan for example?

In theory global corporate culture should take over really as that is the culture most people are spending their time in now. It will be interesting to see if the tropes we associate with groups of previously isolated peoples are washed away. We are in unprecedented times...

I remember when I was a younger man in the 90s there was a trend in the geographical locations I live in (northern England) to drop the regional accent.

I was never really comfortable doing that because it takes away the uniqueness of the area we live in. I feel more relaxed hearing an accent similar to mine than I do other accents. I think its because I can relate to someone who as grown up in a local area to me. As long as I can understand them :D

One thing I've found is if you go to another country, even another English speaking country, you'll feel more British than you do while in this country. It's a weird feeling.

It was a great show, I've even contacted the company who filmed it to try and find where to get a copy, but they don't own the rights anymore iirc and directed me to who did, but I never got a response from them.

It was a proto-show for the real life Big Brother types of programs that followed.

I do remember the Germans came out the best overall, with the Brits just being typical Brits :p
