I'm thinking about doing this this year there seems to be two options.

1) through travel agency

2) privately with people who are in the buy to let market.

Prices seem really cheap even in the height of summer and it'd be nice to have own pool etc.

Thing is Florida can be a dangerous place crimewise should I be looking at a gated community or is it reasonably safe? Most of the villas are outside the main I-drive area.

Has anyone done this type of Florida trip?

I've been to Florida loads of times but always stayed in nice hotels but now have a kid but still want my privacy and family suites in hotels seem to be the same price as the villas.

Myself and some friends did this (while I lived in England) and it was excellent!! A nice big 4-bed house with attached swimming pool and BBQ area - the place was huge (now I know that just to be American lol ;)).
At the time we booked it through the travel agent, but if I were to do it again I'd book it direct and save a packet!
The types of areas you'll be going to will usually have security in and around the complex/sub division so don't worry too much there.
Just be sure on the location you are booking - try to find out exactly where on a map it is and how far from everything - try and get as close as possible (north Kissimee maybe?)

I went last year for 2 weeks stayed at one of my dads friends villas and it was really good. Had a massive open plan living area and 4 separate bedrooms. Seemed really safe, or at least i had no problems. Was located in Kissimee somewhere in a gated community.

We (well, my parents) hired one years ago just off HWY192 in Kissimmee, behind the Walmart. It was not gated but it was safe - we did not see or hear of any problems.

We rented private from an American couple who advertised in the newspapers over here, they lived on the same estate so they would keep coming over and knocking the door wanting to chat all the time.

If you rent private, don't forget to ask if you get use of the garage included. We assumed we did but after parking the car up they came over and told us we couldnt use it as it had their private stuff in there. would have been nice to keep the car cooler, instead of leaving the car running for 10mins whilst the air con works its magic.
