I have recently started to take a complete image of my PC using Vista Ultimates complete Backup - to a spare Hard Drive (the backup is approx 170GB)

I am just wondering if anyone has actually tried to restore their system from an Image created using their Vista Backup - and if so, was it simple enough and did it work as expected ?

Tried this with my Laptop, went to do restore and kept coming up with error message saying no Backup available!

Tried different ways including safe mode and system restore, gave up in the end and started using Acronis.

done it a fair few times (complete pc backup to a seperate HD partition) running vista x64, never once had a problem, and has always been a doddle to do, no real need to use anything else now

got a little question about how you tell it where to restore the backup.

there are two drives...
an 80gig ide drive where vista is installed on 80gig partition called vista
a 500gig sata drive with a ~340gig partion called video, an 80gig partition called backup and 80gig of unallocated space

i took a back up from my 80gig vista partition to the backup partition on the 500gig drive

now i've disconnected the 80gig and want to restore the backup to the 80gig of unallocated space on the 500gig drive, how should i procceed

vistas recovery tools detects the backup and gives the option to restore it, but then doesnt say where its going to restore it to and just says its going to format all the disks connected in the process, what do i do? i dont want to lose my video partition

from memory, i dont think you get the option to change where it will re image, youmay have to do some jugleing with your partitions so it can go back where it was originaly imaged from.

yes, from what i have now read it will restore to the partition with same letter c:->c:

so i'm going to create a new partition and then try to label it as c: using the tools from the recovery console command prompt

*fingers crossed*

Ive done it once. Made a back up file on a different hard drive. Used the vista dvd, went to repair options and the backup software restored everything.

just make sure the partition is no smaller than the original, Ive read a few people say they have ran into trouble with the partition size

yes the new partition is exactly the same size as the original partition

should be able to use dskpart and bcdedit to make sure they have the correct correct drive letter

thanks for the quick replies
