Anyone rolled out Windows 7 yet?

Because we are a small company I give people the option of Vista or 7. I will put 7 on my PC at some point.

There is a bit of a problem with vSphere though so Im being lazy and thats putting me off.

Some would say there is a bit of a security risk rolling at new OS that hasnt been tried and tested. I know a lot of people waited until SP1 for Vista.

I had to use a workaround to get vpshere client working on my windows 7 64bit edition.

that's the only things so far I've had issues with.

Yeah I've done the workaround on my home PC.

Might be a job for this week. Would be interesting to see what some of the people at bigger organisations view on it is.

Currently have a test network running on server 2008 with a single windows 7 workstation connected to it, have a few months of testing to do before i can roll it out

Need to test that every program works (being school software it's often poorly coded crap that needs 101 workarounds to get some things working) also need to spend £4k on memory to get about 350 of the 750 machines up to scratch to run it (they only have 512mb and from what i've read 512mb doesnt quite cut it so i'll be sorting them out to 2gb each)

Need to get the vmwares upgraded to ESX 4 as well, there still currently running on 3.5, was hoping to get the testing done by about april/may next year so we can use the 6weeks that kids are off in the summer to get the servers up and running on server 2008 and as many stations as possible on windows 7 with some remaining on xp until the following half terms

It's one hell of a task but it has to be done really, kids need to be using the latest stuff so that they can learn it for when they go out in to the real world hence our eagerness to make the jump, still running office2003 everywhere as well and that will have to go to 2007 soon too

Currently have around 160 machines running windows 7 professional 64bit, seems to be ok so far, having a few issues with network printers using UNC paths, but other than that, no real problems.

All thats left now is to move all the student PC's over to it. :D

Our company defo aint jumping straight in

Iam currently runnning a lot of tests with our own in house software to see how
it reacts with windows 7 , we recognised how carp vista was so never went near it

If you said something like that in the Windows subforum you would start a bit of a riot.

Luckily I think the Server & Ent people are a bit more civilised so hopefully this wont go too off topic.

Indeed, we're far more civilised round here. Not to mention he's right, we never deployed Vista for anything in the office. We've got an infrastructure upgrade coming next summer which will probably begin the roll out for one department (probably the developers or some other technical team I expect). I think any sooner than that would be madness in a business environment, there's no compelling feature and no rush so make sure it works flawlessly first...

We've got it running on most of our machines in the office. I myself have it running. I have had some issues with Oracle and Visual Studio. 1 or 2 issues with drivers (the network ones, mainly not picking up the network immediately. A disable and re-enable of the card would fix this. The ultimate solution was getting rid of the default Win7 Drivers and going to Intel website to download).

We never went to Vista on account of the poor feedback and hellish driver issues.

We will begin a further rollout next summer probably - I'm very impressed so far.

We've never rolled out Vista, and we've no plans for Windows 7. Tbh though, were still living in the stone age with a Win2K AD and Exchange 2K3 in most places.

But hell, I'm not responsible for the Server policy or Desktops - I'm a just one of the Network guys :D

I am running Windows 7 Pro with in our SBS 2008 network and no real issues, XP Mode is brilliant, meaning I can keep my 7 install tidy (just have Office 2007 Enterprise, Firefox and NOD32 X64 installed)
Just about to change the office PC to Win 7 too and install Sage into XP Mode

We have also had a lot of clients interested in 7 because of XP Mode (they have old software that just about works on XP, but not Vista/7), but also because of the USB/Serial passthrough as they use a lot of dongle devices for their hardware.

As usual in a big company, its not up to me, I have to wait for the 'build team' to evaluate Windows 7 and by that time Windows 8 will be out...

Re Windows XP mode. There are certain pieces of software which don't work with this. Don't kid yourself into thinking it's the answer to all the compatability problems. The one we have particular difficulty with is something called PC Duo - albeit a fairly old version.

Had Windows 7 on my work laptop since the Beta.

Got a couple of people using it with no problems, they love it in fact and asked to have it :)
No strange software on them though... Works nicely with a 2008 R2 domain as well :)

Would cost us a small fortune to change uo to win7. Our client pc's run xp pro, but the hardware on most is really old and wouldn't take win 7, so major upgrades would be required.
I may put a test station on the domain and see how it works with Exchange 2008 et al.
Anyone know if win7 mail will work with Exchange or does it still have to be full blown outlook?

We have opted for our newly purchased laptops to come with W7 - we also skipped vista, but have no other 7 installs currently (and a 2003 domain..). Might aswell jump into the deepend!
